BALTIMORE –
Ann Ernst had a double-double with 20 kills and 13 digs in her final Loyola University Maryland home match, but the Greyhounds lost in four to the U.S. Military Academy, 25-20, 25-21, 22-25, 25-12, on Saturday afternoon.
Loyola will see the Black Knights again on Tuesday, however, when the teams meet in the Patriot League Quarterfinals. Army West Point (20-9 overall, 11-5 Patriot League) will be the tournament's No. 3 seed and host the sixth-seeded Greyhounds (13-17, 6-10) in West Point, N.Y. at 7 p.m.
Ernst's 20 kills – the 16
th game of her career with 20 or more kills – moved her 2019 total to 483, good for fifth-most in school single-season history and only two behind Carisa Kreichauf (2000) and Nina Camaioni (2010) who are tied for third with 485.
She also moved into fifth in Patriot League history with 1,587 kills, passing the U.S. Naval Academy's Rachel Shropa who had 1,577 from 1996-99. Ernst is third in school history in kills and eighth with 1,161 career digs.
Abby Hamilton added 11 kills for the Greyhounds, while
Molly Jarvis had seven kills and two blocks in her final Reitz Arena appearance for Loyola.
Katie Forsythe posted 26 digs, while
Corinne Filograna had 13.
Ashley Dwyer passed around 48 assists.
Army West Point opened the match by hitting .302 in the first set, putting away 13 kills without an error in the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Black Knights made eight miscues while hitting in the second, but they took a 2-0 lead as Loyola hit just .071 in the stanza with eight errors of its own.
In the third, Loyola opened up a 14-9 lead with a 4-0 run started by a
Mackenzie Fedota kill and a Fedota-
Megan Bukala block.
The Black Knights closed to within a point at 19-18 on an Emmy Barnhorst swing, but after a Loyola timeout, Hamilton put away a kill for a Greyhounds sideout. Barnhorst responded with another kill for her team to get Army West Point within one, 20-19, but Hamilton had two kills in a row to open up a 22-19 advantage.
Loyola held onto a lead of at least two as it finished out the set with a win and forced the fourth.
The Greyhounds, however, hit a -.115 clip in the fourth while Army West Point swung .400 to close out the match.
Barnhorst and Monica Eckford both had 13 kills for the Black Knights, while Ana Oglivie had 30 digs.
