BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland senior
Hannah Hoefs was selected as the Patriot League Midfielder of the Year on Tuesday morning. She showed everyone why later that evening.
Hoefs sent a long-distance blast from 35 yards out just under the crossbar and into the back of the net with 2:42 left in double overtime, lifting the Greyhounds to a 1-0 victory over Lafayette in the Patriot League quarterfinals.
Loyola (7-7-4) advances to the semifinals for the second time since joining the conference in 2013, and earns a matchup at top-seeded Navy at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon. Lafayette concludes its 2019 season with a final record of 7-6-5.
Hoefs, who has led the conference in scoring for a majority of the fall, tallied her eighth goal of the season.
Ariel Tillman added her third assist after setting up the play from the left side.
Loyola had most of the top scoring chances, hitting the woodwork on three separate occasions prior to the game-winner.
Beth Eversman had an effort sent off the crossbar midway through the first half,
Sarah Bayer headed a shot off the post with 5:42 remaining in regulation, and Hoefs hit the post 1:12 before her winning strike.
Paige Sim made three saves in goal to secure her fifth shutout of the season. She improves her record to 6-2-4 with a microscopic 0.51 goals-against average and a .883 save percentage.
Shots were even at 13-13, and Loyola had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. The Greyhounds earn their first-ever win in the Patriot League tournament, as their previous semifinal appearance in 2015 came after advancing on penalty kicks following a scoreless draw with Colgate.
Hoefs has factored in 11 of Loyola's 17 goals this season. She has a team-high 35 points (14 G, 7 A) over the last two seasons combined.
Next up is another trip to Navy on Friday. The two teams met in Annapolis last Friday, with Sim making seven saves to seal a scoreless draw which guaranteed tonight's home game at Ridley. The Greyhounds will be looking for their first appearance in a conference championship game since they won the MAAC tournament in 2012.
Second-seeded Holy Cross will face No. 3 Army West Point in the other semifinal at 7 p.m. after Army topped Colgate by a 4-0 final on Tuesday. The Patriot League championship game will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon in Annapolis.
