BALTIMORE –
Jordan Wiley scored his first collegiate goal in the 44th minute, as Loyola University Maryland men's soccer finished up the regular season with a 1-0 Patriot League victory over American at Ridley Athletic Complex on Wednesday.
The Greyhounds (10-7-1, 7-2) finish tied with Lehigh (11-4-3, 6-0-3) for first place in the conference standings with 21 points apiece, becoming the first team in Patriot League men's soccer history to earn regular season championships in three-consecutive seasons.
Lehigh will be the No. 1 seed in the postseason tournament through its 1-0 victory over Loyola on Oct. 12. The Mountain Hawks secured the top spot tonight with a 1-1 home draw against Bucknell. The Greyhounds, as the No. 2 seed, receive a first-round bye and will host a conference semifinal at 7 p.m. next Tuesday.
Loyola has now gone 5-0-1 since its defeat to Lehigh, outscoring opponents by a 19-4 margin during that stretch. The Greyhounds outshot American (3-11-2, 3-5-1) by a total of 13-3 in tonight's victory.
Wiley's goal came with 1:45 remaining in the opening half, as he stole the ball from an Eagle defender and lofted a shot over charging goalkeeper John Mino into the back of the net.
Chase Vosvick was required to make just one save, on an effort by American's Tim Neumann in the 47th minute, to secure a second-straight shutout in goal. Vosvick is up to 18 clean sheets during his first 49 appearances at Loyola.
The Greyhounds, who finished alone in first place in the conference in both 2017 and 2018, have gone 21-5-1 against Patriot League opponents during the last three regular seasons.
Now Loyola turns its attention to the conference tournament, looking to claim its first Patriot League postseason championship and earn a spot in the Division I tournament for the first time since 2009. The Greyhounds will play either No. 3 Navy, No. 4 Lafayette or No. 5 Colgate at Ridley in next Tuesday's semifinal at 7 p.m.
The Patriot League quarterfinal matchups are scheduled for Saturday afternoon, with Navy hosting No. 6 Bucknell at 1 p.m. and Lafayette facing Colgate at 3 p.m.
