BALTIMORE – Binghamton University took its only lead of the game with 9:36 left in the first half as a Richard Caldwell, Jr., 3-pointer gave the Bearcats a 20-19 lead, but host Loyola Universiy Maryland answered with threes from
Isaiah Hart and
Kenneth Jones on its next two possessions, sparking a 23-5 run to close the half. The Greyhounds finished with a 77-65 victory in non-conference play Sunday night, snapping the Bearcats' four-game winning streak.
Andrew Kostecka led four Greyhounds in double-figures with 17 points, while
KaVaughn Scott added 14 and six rebounds.
Golden Dike put up 12 points, and
Cam Spencer had 11 to go with five assists and just one turnover.
After the threes by Hart and Jones, Jaylin Andres scored five in a row for the Greyhounds to make it an 11-0 run before George Tinsley knocked down a Binghamton three with 4:40 on the clock, closing the gap to 30-23.
Scott and
Brent Holcombe, who had a team-high eight rebounds for Loyola (4-4 overall), scored on back-to-back layups, and Scott made a pair from the charity stripe to extend the lead to 13 just over a minute later.
Sam Sessoms converted a Binghamton layup at 2:58, but that was the last points for the Bearcats (4-4) in the half. Kostecka and Dike each scored before the break as Loyola shot a season-high 63-percent from the field in the first half to take a 42-25 lead.
Three minutes and 10 seconds into the second half, Spencer hit a three to give Loyola a 21-point lead, 51-30, but threes by Sessoms and Tinsley on consecutive Bearcats possession cut the deficit to 12, 59-47, with 11:47 remaining.
Loyola scored the next eight points to go back up by 20, 67-47, on a Holcombe basket with 9:07 on the clock, but Binghamton had another run in it. The Bearcats go within 10, 73-63, on a Sessoms three with 1:14 left, but
Kenneth Jones and
Andrew Kostecka made pairs of free throws to ice the victory.
Tinsley had 24 points and 10 rebounds for Binghamton, and Sessoms added 17, 13 in the second half. Pierre Sarr pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds.
Loyola continues non-conference play on Wednesday, December 4, when it travels to Dover, Delaware, to face Delaware State University in a 7 p.m. game.
