DOVER, Del. – Delaware State University's "Pinky" Wiley's free throw with 1:44 left cut Loyola University Maryland's lead to three, but the Greyhounds scored seven-straight and made all seven of their free throws after that point to build a 10-point lead and pull away for an 82-72 non-conference road win.
Four Greyhounds (5-4 overall) scored in double-figures, led by
Andrew Kostecka's 25 points.
KaVaughn Scott scored 14, six coming in the last four minutes, while
Cam Spencer and
Kenneth Jones each tallied 13.
The Greyhounds had a 36-33 advantage in rebounds, led by
Golden Dike's eight and Kostecka's seven. Spencer had a game-high five assists and the national leader in assist-to-turnover ratio did not commit a miscue.
After Wiley's free throw made it a three-point game, Scott caught a Spencer pass and scored while being fouled in the paint. He then knocked down a free throw to make it 78-72 with 51 ticks on the clock.
An airballed 3-point attempt by the Hornets gave Loyola the ball with 45 seconds left, and four ticks later Kostecka was fouled, making two at the line. The Greyhounds then forced an off-balance look for Delaware State, and Spencer came down with the rebound. He was fouled and then hit two free throws to extend the run to 7-0 and push the lead to 10.
Earlier in the half, Delaware State used a 13-2 run to go up 52-46 when John Crosby hit a long jumper with 12:10 on the clock, but Jones immediate answered with threes on the Greyhounds' next two possessions to draw the score even at 52-52.
Delaware State missed a three at the other end, and after a Loyola jumper went off the mark, Dike came down with the board and was fouled going back to the basket. He hit both foul shots to give Loyola two-point advantage.
Jones' runner in the lane with 9:20 left made it a 56-52 lead, but Delaware State scored the next five to go back up one.
Jaylin Andrews momentarily put Loyola back in front with a basket at 8:15 only to see Crosby score in the paint to push the lead back in the Hornets' favor.
Just over 20 seconds later, Dike grabbed an offensive board and then found
Isaiah Hart for a three from the top right, and Loyola was back in front for the rest of the game.
Hart finished with eight points, and Andrews tallied six.
Crosby scored 31 points to lead all scorers, posting 26 in the second half. Ameer Bennett had 14 in the first half for Delaware State, but he finished with just 16.
Loyola will be back on the road Saturday, December 7, to face Mount St. Mary's University in a 4 p.m. contest.
