Swimming & Diving Surges to Lead on Day 1 of H2ounds Invitational

BALTIMORE – Strong efforts by sophomores Jimmy Hayburn and Elizabeth Walsh and a trio of school records helped the Loyola University Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams top their respective leaderboards after the first day of the H2ounds Invitational at Mangione Pool on Friday evening.

Hayburn finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (20.41) and contributed to the victorious 400-medley relay team to lead the men's team to 343 points in the six-team competition. The Greyhounds are ahead of Marist (285), St. Peter's (165), Iona (158), Howard (123) and Virginia Military Institute (98) after the first day of competition.

Walsh finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:04.77) and swam on first-place 400 medley and 800 free relay squads. Walsh helped the 400-medley relay team break the school record and the pool record with a time of 3:43.13. She led off that relay and was followed by Devin Cronin, Emily Koegl and Megan Dickey.

The Loyola women's team finished the first day with 328 points, leading Marist (294), Iona (223), St. Peter's (109), VMI (83) and Howard (81).

On the men's side, Conor Rutigliano, David Sears and Sung Lee joined Hayburn on the 400-medley relay which posted a winning time of 3:18.22. Loyola also had the second place 400-medley team as Jonathan Brooks, Jay Venit, Zac Metzler and Colin Anderson posted a time of 3:19.51.

While leading off for the 400 medley relay team, Rutigliano set a school record in the 100 backstroke with a mark of 48.91. The previous record of 49.06, which was held by Sam McQuaid, had stood since 2009.

The Greyhounds' 800 free relay team also set school and pool records as Lee, Max Verheyen, Reid Hussey and Dylan Champagne finished first with a time of 6:42.60.

Verheyen also finished first in the 200 IM (1:49.00) while Hussey was fifth. Tommy Noone was the Greyhounds' top swimmer in the 500 free as he finished fourth.

In the 50 free, Hayburn led a Loyola sweep of the top three places. Anderson finished second (20.62) and Brendan Kolar took third (20.85).

Jack Still led Loyola on the one-meter diving by finishing third with 232.45 points.

The women's team turned in five first place finishes in the six events on Friday evening. The Greyhounds had the top two 400 medley relay teams, as Maggie Manchester, Emma Schouten, Anne Hayburn and Claire Bowser took second with a time of 3:49.31.

The Loyola women's team also won the 800 free relay as Schouten, Bowser, Sarah Abril and Walsh teamed up for a time of 7:43.21.

Schouten added a first place finish in the 500 free (4:58.28). Walsh and Koegl finished one-two in the 200 IM while Dickey was the first place finisher in the 50 free (23.43). Sophie Jahan followed Dickey in fourth place (24.16).

In the three-meter diving, Jessica Stolfi took fourth place for the Greyhounds (185.70 points) and Elizabeth Berta was fifth (166.67).
