BALTIMORE – Sarah Bayer's first goal of 2019 was a memorable one, as she fired in the game-winner 5:49 into overtime to lift Loyola University Maryland women's soccer to a 2-1 home victory over Seton Hall on Sunday.

Hannah Hoefs added a goal and an assist to help the Greyhounds (1-0) enter the win column in Joe Mallia's first official game as head coach since he last led the program from 1998-2004. Cassy Harrigan opened the scoring for the Pirates (0-1) on an unassisted strike in the 29th minute.

Ariel Tillman had the primary assist on the winning tally, as she maneuvered around two Seton Hall defenders and found Bayer on the left side of goal. Bayer than spun around a defender of her own before sending a low shot into the right-hand corner past goalkeeper Harpa Johannsdottir.

Tillman picked up her first collegiate point on the play, while Bayer now has five goals in her first 18 games at Loyola. The Greyhounds earned their first overtime victory since current senior Mary Theresa Corcoran finished off UMBC (2-1, 2OT) on Aug. 31, 2017.

Seton Hall led for just over 10 minutes in the first half before Hoefs leveled the score for the home side. After Bayer won a free kick right outside the box, the senior midfielder curled an effort into the top left corner to make it 1-1. Hoefs has now scored in three-consecutive games for Loyola dating back to the end of last season.

Both teams were held scoreless off five shots apiece in the second half. Bayer's winner was the first shot for either side in overtime. Senior Lily Andres made three saves to earn a victory in goal.

Each of the last three games between Loyola and Seton Hall have been decided by a single goal. The Greyhounds won 1-0 in overtime back in 2017, while the Pirates emerged with a 1-0 victory last season.

Mallia improves to 88-45-8 across seven-plus seasons as head coach at Loyola. His 88 victories are the most in program history.

The Greyhounds hit the road for their next contest, as the travel to VCU for a non-conference tilt beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
