BALTIMORE –
Ariel Tillman and
Sarah Bayer each recorded a goal and an assist in the second half, as Loyola University Maryland women's soccer returned to the win column with a 2-0 victory over VMI at Ridley Athletic Complex on Friday.
Tillman opened the scoring with her first collegiate goal 2:30 into the second half, while Bayer doubled the advantage for the Greyhounds (2-4) in the 66th minute.
Lily Andres and
Paige Sim combined to post a clean sheet in goal, with Sim earning her a win in her Loyola debut after entering after halftime.
VMI (1-5) had four of the game's first five shots, but the Greyhounds began to take control of the contest midway through the opening half. Loyola fired off 12-consecutive shots over 18 minutes of game action, led by a team-high five efforts from
Hannah Hoefs. VMI goalie Noelle Heilpern made a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless heading into the intermission.
The Greyhounds kept up the pressure after the break, and they were rewarded with a goal in the 48th minute.
Beth Eversman found Bayer past the midfield line, and Bayer directed the ball on to Tillman just outside the box. Tillman then worked around a defender in front and beat Heilpern on a low shot into the right corner.
Eversman logged her first collegiate point on the play, while Bayer's assist was her second this season and third overall at Loyola.
Bayer's insurance goal was reminiscent of her overtime winner over Seton Hall earlier this season, as she took a pass from Tillman, spun around a defender and fired an attempt into the right corner. Bayer is up to 15 points (6 G, 3 A) through her first 23 collegiate games.
The Greyhounds defense did the rest for the remainder of the contest, holding the visitors without a shot on goal throughout the second half. The home side led 17-10 overall in shots, and 5-0 in corner kicks.
Loyola returns to the road on Sunday, traveling to Penn for a 4 p.m. matchup. That will be the Greyhounds' final tune-up prior to the start of Patriot League play at Lehigh next Saturday.
