Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Hoefs’ OT Winner Sends Women’s Soccer Past Delaware State

DOVER, Del. – Hannah Hoefs fired in a free kick from 19 yards out with 2:43 left in the first overtime session, lifting Loyola University Maryland women's soccer to a 2-1 victory at Delaware State on Tuesday.

Hoefs provided the game-winner for a second-consecutive contest, and the Greyhounds (4-5) have won three of their last four games overall. Ariel Tillman opened the scoring for the visitors 1:26 into the second half.

Hoefs, who was honored as Patriot League Midfielder of the Week on Monday after scoring the lone goal in Saturday's 1-0 win at Lehigh, now leads the conference with five goals on the year. Paige Sim played all 97 minutes in goal to improve to 3-0 in her debut collegiate season.

Loyola had a dominant 17-2 advantage in shots, including a 7-0 edge in the first half, but the game remained scoreless after the opening 45 minutes of play.

Tillman quickly changed that out of the break. Hoefs found Gillian Borton on the left side of the field, and Borton fed the ball to Tillman in the box. Tillman then powered a shot into the left corner for her second goal of 2019.

Borton picked up her first collegiate point on the play, while Hoefs' assist gave her a second three-point game of the season.

The Hornets (0-10) equalized against the run of play in the 54th minute. Loyola was called for a foul in the box after a corner kick, and Mary O'Connor converted from the spot to level the game at 1-1.

Both sides had chances to avoid overtime in the final half hour. Hoefs had a shot tipped aside by a diving Fabrea McCray in goal in the 65th minute, and O'Connor had a long-distance effort clang off the crossbar with 2:47 remaining in regulation.

Hoefs' game-winner was a low show into the left corner. Three of her five goals this season have come off free kicks.

Loyola returns to Patriot League play on Saturday afternoon, hosting Holy Cross in a 3 p.m. tilt at Ridley Athletic Complex.
