Volleyball’s Rally Falls Just Short Against Western Michigan

CHICAGO – Loyola University Maryland lost the first two sets Friday evening against Western Michigan University, but the Greyhounds won the next two to push to a fifth set only to see the Broncos hold on for a 25-18, 25-16, 21-25, 22-25, 15-13 victory at the Hampton Inn Rambler Challenge.

Ann Ernst led Loyola with 18 kills, while Abby Hamilton was one back with 17. Cat Vaccaro and Molly Jarvis each had seven, and Adara Kellogg tallied six blocks. Katie Forsythe posted a season-high 35 digs for her third match out of five contests with 28 or more this year. Ashley Dwyer posted a career-high 49 assists.

Two kills by Ernst and one by Vaccaro put Loyola in front, 13-11, in the third set, but Rachel Bontrager had one of her match-high 20 kills to sideout for the Broncos (5-0 overall).

Western Michigan then had a service ace, and Meredith Phillips tallied a kill to give the Broncos match-point at 14-13. A Loyola hitting miscue then sealed the win for Western Michigan.

Loyola will return to the court for its final match at the tournament on Saturday at 1 p.m. (Eastern) to face Montana State University.
