BALTIMORE – Aerial Chavarin scored two goals, while Ellery Winkler and Chloe Laureano added two assists apiece to help Yale hand Loyola University Maryland women's soccer a 3-1 setback at Ridley Athletic Complex on Friday.
Hannah Hoefs scored the lone goal for the Greyhounds (1-3) on a penalty kick in the eighth minute. Noelle Higginson netted the go-ahead strike for the Bulldogs (2-1) with just over 15 minutes remaining in the opening half.
The home side fell behind less than six minutes in, as Chavarin headed an effort into the back of the net after Winkler's initial shot bounced off the post.
Loyola, though, responded after only 2:25 of game action, as
Kaleigh Gallagher drew a foul in the box to setup Hoefs' PK conversion. Hoefs netted her second goal of 2019, and she is now 3 for 3 all-time from the penalty spot.
Sarah Bayer nearly put the Greyhounds in front shortly afterwards, but her header was tipped away by a diving Alyssa Fagel in goal. Higginson gave the Bulldogs the lead after firing in a cross from Laureano, and Chavarin doubled the advantage two and a half minutes later.
Lily Andres matched a career-high with six saves, including a fantastic diving effort in the opening minute of the second half, to keep Loyola within striking distance throughout. Yale finished with a 15-9 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Greyhounds now hit the road for four of their next five matchups, beginning with a 1 p.m. away tilt at Marist on Sunday afternoon.
