Women’s Basketball Drops OT Decision at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – Emily McAteer recorded her first collegiate double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, but Loyola University Maryland could not overcome a late offensive drought in a 55-52 overtime defeat at Lafayette on Saturday.

The Greyhounds (3-12, 0-4 Patriot League) made the first basket in overtime to take a 52-50 lead before being held off the scoreboard for the final 4:24 of extra time. They dropped their fourth-straight to begin conference play, with all four losses by single digits and the last three by a combined seven points.

Natalie Kucowski had 10 points, including the go-ahead free throw with 56 seconds left, and a game-high 16 rebounds for the Leopards (6-8, 2-2), while Drew Freeland added 19 points on 8 of 14 shooting from the floor.

Stephanie Karcz also managed a double-double for Loyola, doing so for the 25th time in her career with 10 points and 11 rebounds. She chipped in a pair of steals, leaving her one shy of becoming the 27th player in Division I history to reach 400.

Lafayette started the game on a 15-2 run over the first 6:13 of the opening quarter. McAteer and Bri Rozzi, though, provided a spark off the bench to help the Greyhounds ultimately trail by just a 29-26 margin heading into the intermission. McAteer scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half, hitting 5 of 8 field goal attempts, while Rozzi delivered a pair of 3-pointers to go along with three rebounds.

Loyola took its first lead midway through the third quarter, with Alexis Gray and Laryn Edwards combining for nine points in an 11-2 stretch which made it 37-31 in favor of the visitors.

Lafayette had moved back in front 42-39 by the end of the frame, and it was a single-possession game for the entirety of the fourth quarter. A Gray 3-pointer knotted the score at 50 with 2:26 left in regulation, providing what turned out to be the last points prior to the Greyhounds' first overtime game of the season.

Edwards ended the contest with 12 points, as she reached double figures for a third-consecutive game. McAteer, meanwhile, is averaging 14.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in Loyola's first four conference matchups.

The Greyhounds remain on the road for their next Patriot League tilt, heading to Boston University for a 6 p.m. contest on Wednesday.
