Swimming and Diving Falls to Towson

BALTIMORE – Despite first place finishes from Sung Lee, Max Verheyen, Emma SchoutenEmily Koegl and Elizabeth Walsh, the Loyola University Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams dropped their meets to visiting Towson University at Mangione Pool on Wednesday afternoon. The Tiger men's team pulled out a 165-128 decision while the women's team beat Loyola, 190-99.

For the men's team, Lee finished first in the 200-fly (1:50.84). He also swam on the 200-medley relay team which finished a very close second to Towson. Towson posted a time of 1:32.64, just ahead of Loyola's 1:32.68. Conor Rutigliano, Jay Venit and Jimmy Hayburn also swam on the 200-medley relay team.

Verheyen finished first in the 200-breaststroke (2:01.84) and 200 IM (1:52.78). He was also second in the 100-breaststroke (0:57.87). David Sears took third in the 100-breast (0:59.67).

Junior Mark Boran contributed a pair of second place showings for the Greyhounds. He was second in the 100-backstroke (0:52.43) and the 200-backstroke (1:53.96). Rutigliano was third in the 100-back (0:52.56) while Josh Walker took third in the 200-back (1:55.69).

Reid Hussey was the Greyhounds' top swimmer in the 500-free as he finished second (4:42.07). Basalo took fifth place (4:45.68).

In the 100-butterfly, the Greyhounds took second, third and fourth. Richie Kogut (0:50.88) was second, just ahead of Dylan Maziacz (0:52.67) and Rutigliano (0:53.30). 

In the 1650-free, Dylan Champagne took second place (16:09.17) while Alejandro Basolo finished third (16:24.22).

John Nguyen finished second in the 200-free (1:43.84). 

Sophomore Jimmy Hayburn placed second in the 50-free (0:21.03) and third in the 100-free (0:47.54).

In the diving events, Jack Still was third for Loyola. He had 246.38 points in the three-meter dive and 241.27 points in the one-meter dive. Michael Culbert also took fourth place in both dives.
Verheyen also turned in an impressive time of 1:52.78 in the 200 I.M.

In the women's competition, Schouten led the Greyhounds by taking first place in the 200-breaststroke (2:21.83). She also finished third in the 100-breaststroke (1:05.92).

Koegl took first place in the 100-fly with a time of 0:56.70. Senior Annie Hayburn finished fourth in the 100-fly (0:58.25). Hayburn was Loyola's top performer in the 10-backstroke as she took fifth place (1:00.89).

Elizabeth Walsh finished second in the 200-butterfly (2:07.65) while Molly Davis took third place (2:10.72). Walsh also posted a time of 2:09.66 in the 200 I.M.

In the 200-medley relay, Walsh teamed up with Devin Cronin, Koegl, and Sophie Jahan to take second with a time of 1:46.50.

Cronin had a pair of second place finishes. She was second in the 100-breast (1:04.77) and 200-breast (2:26.16).

Jahan finished fifth in the 50-free (0:24.82) while Lauren Joyce was third in 500-free (5:17.58). Joyce was also fifth in the 200-back (2:10.35).

Claire Bowser finished fourth in the 100-free (0:54.98) while Alden Coyne was fifth (0:56.16).

Jess Stolfi led the Greyhounds by taking third place in the three-meter diving with 226.12 points. In the one-meter diving, Allison Echeverria took fifth place with 225.45 points.

The Greyhound men's and women's swimming teams close out the regular season when they host Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, February 1 at 1:00 p.m.
