BALTIMORE – A potential game-winning basket fell short in the final seconds, sending Loyola University Maryland to a 41-39 home defeat at the hands of Boston University on Wednesday evening.
The Greyhounds (5-15, 2-7 Patriot League) were down one coming out of a timeout with seven seconds remaining, but the Terrier defense forced a miss, grabbed the rebound and sank 1 of 2 free throws on the other end to seal the contest. BU (10-10, 5-4) completed a season sweep, with both victories by just two points.
Stephanie Karcz led Loyola with 16 points (8-21 FG), four steals, four rebounds and a pair of blocks. The four thefts moved her career total to 429, tying her with Northwestern's Ashley Deary for 14th all-time in Division I history.
Similar to the meeting in Boston two weeks ago, a 44-42 victory for the Terriers, offense was at a premium throughout. Loyola's 13-7 lead in the opening minute of the second quarter was the largest advantage for either side.
A Karcz layup gave the Greyhounds their final lead of the contest at 33-32 with 5:51 left in regulation.
The Terriers scored six of the next seven points to move in front by four. A 3-point play by
Ashley Hunter reduced the margin down to 38-37 with under three minutes to play, and Karcz's final basket put the score at 40-39 to set up the final sequence.
The teams combined for 39 turnovers, with the Terriers coming out on top despite committing 21 giveaways.
Loyola returns to the road on Saturday, traveling to Navy for a matchup beginning at 4 p.m.
