ANNAPOLIS, Md. –
Alexis Gray scored a season-high 17 points,
Stephanie Karcz recorded her 1,000th career rebound, and Loyola University Maryland closed on a 12-0 run to secure a 50-44 victory at Navy on Saturday.
The Greyhounds (6-15, 3-7 Patriot League) held the Midshipmen (7-14, 2-8) off the scoreboard for the final 5:06 of regulation.
Ashley Hunter put the visitors ahead for good on a layup with 2:21 remaining.
Karcz finished with a season-high 14 rebounds overall to go along with six points, five assists and four steals. Her 13th board of the afternoon made her the fourth player in program history to reach 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her collegiate career. She joins Loyola Hall of Famers Patty Stoffey (1991-95), Mary Beth Akre (1976-80) and Mary Rieman (1975-79).
Gray hit 6 of 11 shots, including a 3 for 5 effort from 3-point range, to lead the offensive effort. She is up to 144 made 3's for her career, tying her with Katie Sheahin (2009-13) for third place in team history. Gray has reached double figures in four of Loyola's last five games overall.
Navy took its largest lead of 24-13 with 5:36 left in the second quarter. The Greyhounds, though, scored the last 10 points of the half to reduce their deficit down to one heading into the intermission. Gray had seven of Loyola's 10 points during the stretch.
Bri Rozzi drained a 3-pointer to begin the third to put the visitors ahead for the first time. That began a back-and-forth second half in which the margin was never greater than two possessions. Navy's final points were a 3-pointer by Mary Kate Ulasewicz which made it 44-38 in favor of the home side midway through the fourth.
After Hunter's go-ahead layup inside,
Hannah Niles sank a key 3-pointer to give Loyola some breathing room with 1:25 left, and she hit a pair of free throws to finish up the scoring with 54 seconds on the clock.
Big performances from
Emily McAteer (nine points, seven rebounds) and Hunter (eight points, five rebounds) off the bench helped the Greyhounds come out on top despite dressing just eight healthy players.
With her four steals, Karcz is up to 122 this winter, putting her two thefts away from breaking her own Loyola single-season record. The Division I leader in steals per game, Karcz has recorded 4+ thefts in 16 of 21 appearances on the year.
Loyola has now won three of its past five games overall. The Greyhounds are back in action next Saturday, traveling to Bucknell for a conference matchup beginning at 2 p.m.
