SAN JUAN, P.R. – Loyola University Maryland swimming and diving competed in the Copa Coqui Invitational on Sunday as part of its annual training trip in Puerto Rico, with the meet highlighted by first-place performances from
Devin Cronin and
Jay Venit in the 100 breaststroke events.
Both the Greyhound women and men placed second in their respective team standings, with the meet consisting of a collection of schools from both Puerto Rico and the mainland United States.
Anne Hayburn and
Elizabeth Walsh each cracked the top 10 in three of the four contested races for the women, while
Max Verheyen added a pair of top 10 showings for the men.
Cronin took first in a field of 51 swimmers in the 100 breast after touching the line in 1:17.68. Other Loyola finishers in the top 10 included
Emma Schouten (3rd, 1:20.26),
Alden Coyne (8th, 1:23.48) and
Abby Andrews (9th, 1:23.67).
The Greyhound women had three place in the top five out of 64 swimmers in the 100 butterfly, with Hayburn taking second place (1:06.01) while
Emily Koegl (1:06.51) followed in third and Walsh (1:07.19) was fifth. Walsh and Hayburn also led the way in the 100 backstroke, placing third and fourth with times of 1:10.52 and 1:10.80, respectively.
Maggie Manchester (1:13.51) added an 11th place showing in the field of 61 competitors.
Hayburn concluded the meet for the women with a fourth-place time of 1:01.99 in the 100 freestyle.
Megan Dickey took sixth out of 106 swimmers with a mark of 1:02.55, just edging out Walsh (1:02.69) in 10th.
Venit led a trio of Loyola men atop the leaderboard in the 100 breast. He touched the line in 1:06.95, while
David Sears (1:08.16) followed in second and Verheyen (1:08.94) was third.
John Nguyen added a top 10 effort for the Greyhounds, as he finished ninth out of 58 swimmers with a time of 1:10.54.
Loyola's men had five of the top 12 finishers in the 100 back, with
Mark Boran (1:02.16) leading the way in fifth place. Other Greyhounds with strong efforts included Verheyen (6th, 1:02.18),
Conor Rutigliano (10th, 1:03.96),
Dylan Champagne (11th, 1:04.90) and
Casey Brown (12th, 1:05.26).
Jimmy Hayburn paced the Greyhounds in the 100 free, as he took third out of 114 swimmers after completing the race in 54.79.
Jonathan Brooks (55.75) added an eighth-place result while
Reid Hussey (56.04) was just outside the top 10 in 11th place.
Two Loyola swimmers cracked the top 10 in a field of 84 in the 100 fly.
John Sakovich took eighth place with a time of 59.70, just out-touching teammate
Zac Metzler (59.72) in ninth.
After wrapping up their Winter Break trip, Loyola returns to Mangione Pool on Monday, Jan. 20 to host La Salle in a dual beginning at 12 p.m.
