BALTIMORE – Rachel Thompson scored four of her game-high 25 points during a 6-0 run over the last 2:56 of regulation, helping Colgate pull out a 76-74 victory over Loyola University Maryland at Reitz Arena on Wednesday.
Abby Schubiger sank the go-ahead layup with 44 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. She finished the contest with 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Raiders (10-4, 2-1 Patriot League).
Laryn Edwards led the Loyola offense for a second-straight contest, as she poured in a career-high 19 points for the home side while hitting 3 of 6 attempts from 3-point range and all 10 shots from the free throw line.
Stephanie Karcz chipped in 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals for the Greyhounds (3-11, 0-3), who once again battled down to the wire despite dressing just eight healthy players.
The two teams combined for 15 ties and 20 lead changes, with neither side leading by more than five points throughout the second half.
The fourth quarter alone contained five ties and 10 lead changes. Colgate held a 68-65 advantage with six minutes remaining, when
Emily McAteer drained a 3-pointer to begin a 9-2 stretch for Loyola. That run was capped by a Karcz layup with 2:56 on the clock which made it 74-70 in favor of the Greyhounds, but that would turn out to be their final points of the afternoon.
Thompson, who scored her 1,000th career point as part of her 25-point performance, went 1 for 2 from the line with 16 seconds left to put Colgate up by a pair. The Raider defense then shut down a pair of Loyola attempts to tie the score in the closing seconds.
The Greyhounds had four players score 10+ points for a second time this season, as McAteer (14 points, seven rebounds) and
Delaney Connolly (10 points, six rebounds) joined Edwards and Karcz in double figures.
Edwards has totaled 35 points in Loyola's last two games while playing 75 of a possible 80 minutes. Her previous scoring high was a 17-point effort in a win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 13. Karcz, meanwhile, came up one rebound shy of her 25th career double-double.
Loyola, which has dropped its first three Patriot League games by a combined 12 points, will search for its first conference victory on the road this weekend, as the Greyhounds travel to Lafayette for a 2 p.m. matchup on Saturday.
