ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Only five events were contested on the first day of the 2020 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, but that was enough time for Loyola University Maryland to establish five new program records.
Conor Rutigliano and
Elizabeth Walsh set individual marks in the 50-yard backstroke as they led off record-breaking 200 medley relay squads. The men's 800 free relay team of
Sung Lee,
Colin Anderson,
Reid Hussey and
Max Verheyen then took nearly nine seconds off the old program best while finishing third to conclude the evening.
The men sit in third place overall out of 10 schools with a team score of 64 points, while the women are sixth with 61 points. Navy is currently on top of the leaderboard in both genders.
Walsh,
Devin Cronin,
Emily Koegl and
Megan Dickey began the session with a third-place time of 1:41.65 in the women's 200 medley relay. That took down the old school record of 1:42.34 set at the 2018 conference meet, while Walsh's backstroke split of 26.40 was under her own previous record time of 26.64 from last winter.
Rutigliano,
Jay Venit,
Sung Lee and
Jimmy Hayburn then took third with their record-breaking mark of 1:29.02 in the men's race. The previous time of 1:29.66 was established by the same group last February. Rutigliano's 50 back time of 23.16, meanwhile, beat out teammate
Jonathan Brooks' old record of 23.92.
Lee, Anderson, Hussey and Verheyen finished the 800 free relay in 6:33.83, demolishing the old record of 6:42.60 from this year's H2ounds Invitational. Lee began the race with a PR 200 free time of 1:38.34.
Jessica Stolfi and
Allison Echeverria added 11 points to the women's team total after placing 11th and 12th, respectively, in the 3-meter dive competition. Stolfi scored 206.80 points to just edge out Echeverria's 206.15.
The other 18 points for the Greyhound women came through a ninth-place showing in the 800 free relay, with
Emma Schouten, Dickey,
Claire Bowser and Walsh completing the race in 7:37.77. Schouten recorded a 200 free PR of 1:53.38 to begin the event.
Day 2 of the championships begins with swimming preliminaries in the 500 free, 200 individual medley and 50 free at 10 a.m. on Thursday. Men's 1-meter diving preliminaries will be held at 1 p.m., with the finals session getting underway at 6 p.m.
