Hayburn Wins 50 Free, Four More Records Fall on Day 2 of Patriot League Championships

Jimmy Hayburn
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Jimmy Hayburn made history on Thursday night, as he became the second Loyola University Maryland swimmer to win gold at the Patriot League Championships after taking first place in the men's 50-yard freestyle.

The sophomore from Bowie touched the line in a school-record time of 19.99 to edge out top-seeded Josh Zock (20.09) from Army West Point. That was one of four more program records overall on Day 2 of the competition, giving the Greyhounds nine at the halfway point of the meet.

Max Verheyen claimed the other individual record in the 200 individual medley, first setting the mark with a preliminary round time of 1:48.13. He quickly demolished that effort with a second-place, NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:45.96 in the evening session.

The men and women then finished off the second day with school records in the 400 medley relay, with both teams placing third in their respective races.

The men enter Friday in third place with 152 points, two ahead of fourth-place Bucknell. The women are sixth with 125 points, putting them between Lehigh (167) and Colgate (75).

Hayburn joins Ben Cono, a four-time winner in the breaststroke events, as Loyola's two gold medalists in swimming and diving since moving to the Patriot League prior to the 2013-14 academic year. He is Loyola's third individual Patriot League champion overall, along with current women's track & field junior Senna Ohlsson, who won the indoor and outdoor 800m last year.

Hayburn's preliminary time of 20.12 was under the old Loyola record of 20.34 established by Ruslan Kopunek in 2016. He lowered that down by over a tenth in the final while coming just three-hundredths short of an NCAA 'B' cut standard.

Verheyen's preliminary time beat out Cono's old Loyola record of 1:48.93 from 2018, and he took over two seconds off his morning time in the finals. Verheyen bested Army's Brian McKenrick (1:46.16) for the silver medal, while Navy's Micah Oh (1:45.38) finished in first. All three registered 'B' cut times.

Emily Koegl was the top individual finisher on the women's side, as she added 14 points to the team total with a fifth-place effort in the 200 IM. Her time of 2:03.06 was just eight-hundredths off her own program record from the 2018 conference meet.

Megan Dickey also reached an 'A' final for the women, taking sixth in the 50 free after touching the wall in 23.25. Loyola had two additional swimmers make 'B' finals, with Emma Schouten placing 13th in the 500 free (4:58.31) while Elizabeth Walsh was 16th in the 200 IM (2:07.37).

Walsh, Devin Cronin, Koegl and Dickey were the four Greyhound swimmers in their record-breaking 400 medley relay. They completed the race in 3:41.15, taking almost two seconds off their own record of 3:43.13 from this year's H2ounds Invitational.

On the men's side, it was Conor Rutigliano, Verheyen, Sung Lee and Hayburn who earned the school record. Their time of 3:14.87 was over two seconds quicker than the old mark of 3:17.36 from last year's conference meet.

Five other Loyola men scored individually on Thursday, led by Jack Still's ninth-place effort in the 1-meter dive. He totaled 251.10 points, while Michael Culbert followed in 16th place with 122.35 points.

Colin Anderson (13th, 20.84) and Brendon Kolar (15th, 20.96) both made it to the 'B' final in the 50 free, and Reid Hussey added a 14th place showing in the 200 IM (1:50.51). Dylan Champagne was the top Loyola finisher in the 500 free, placing 19th with a time of 4:35.79.

Friday morning's session, beginning at 10 a.m., will consist of preliminary swims in the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke. Prelims in the women's 1-meter dive follow at 1 p.m.
