ANNAPOLIS, Md. – It was another historic night for Loyola University Maryland's swimming and diving program, as senior
Devin Cronin become the first Greyhound women's swimmer to claim a Patriot League title after topping the field in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Cronin bested the field with a school-record and NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:01.79. She becomes Loyola's second individual champion in as many days at this year's Patriot League Championship meet after
Jimmy Hayburn won the 50 freestyle on Thursday.
Cronin was the No. 2 qualifier for the final with a mark of 1:02.71, and she lowered that by almost a second in the evening. She beat out Army's Gillian Burch (1:02.12) in second place, while her Greyhound teammate
Emma Schouten followed in third place. Schouten managed a PR time of 1:02.45 to give Loyola two of the three podium finishers.
The Greyhounds finished Day 3 of the meet with five more school records overall and an impressive six top-three finishes. The men remain third in the team standings with 271 points, over 40 ahead of Bucknell (229.5) in fourth, while the women are sixth overall with 222 points.
Emily Koegl and
Sung Lee set the tone for the day with school-record times in the preliminary round of their respective 100 butterfly races. Both would take additional time off those marks in the evening 'A' finals.
Koegl's preliminary time of 54.08 beat out her old previous Loyola record, and she lowered that down to 53.94 while reaching the podium with a third-place finish in the final. Koegl registers her second top-five effort of the meet, as she was fifth in the 200 individual medley last night.
Lee also bettered his own 100 fly record at 48.57 in the morning, and he took nearly a half-second off that effort after touching the wall in 48.08 in the finals. That earned him a silver medal and the sophomore's first career spot on the podium.
Next up on the podium was freshman
Max Verheyen, who made a return trip after taking second in the 200 IM on Thursday. Today, he grabbed third place in the 400 IM with a school-record and NCAA 'B' cut mark of 3:47.91. That was nearly seven seconds off his time in the prelims, and it breaks a Loyola program best which had been held by Brennan Morris (3:48.81) since 2012. Verheyen finished just one-hundredth of a second out of second place.
The men's 200 free relay rounded out Friday's records, as
Colin Anderson,
Jimmy Hayburn,
Reid Hussey and Lee took third with a program-best time of 1:20.64. They were less than a second back of Navy (1:19.83) in first place. The women, meanwhile, were sixth in the 200 free relay, with
Megan Dickey,
Sophie Jahan,
Anne Hayburn and
Faith Tyranski completing their race in 1:34.41.
Two more Greyhounds qualified for 'A' finals on Day 3, as
Jay Venit placed eighth in the men's 100 breast (56.11) while
Conor Rutigliano recorded an eighth-place finish in the 100 backstroke (49.65).
Several other swimmers and divers also added to Loyola's point total, with 12 Greyhounds recording top-16 finishes. In the women's 1-meter dive, it was
Allison Echeverria (225.50) placing ninth while
Jessica Stolfi (186.35) was 15th.
Three Loyola men reached the 'B' final in the 100 fly. Rutigliano (49.92) was 12th,
Jimmy Hayburn (49.99) was 14th and
Zac Metzler (50.23) was 16th.
The men and women also combined for three 'B' finalists in both the 100 breast and 100 back races.
Abby Andrews (1:05.63) was 13th in the women's 100 breast, while
John Sakovich (9th, 55.96) and
Luca Dicapua (15th, 56.88) qualified in the men's race. In the back, it was
Elizabeth Walsh (13th, 56.24) for the women and
Jonathan Brooks (12th, 50.15) and
Mark Boran (50.27) for the men.
Reid Hussey added a 12th place showing for the men in the 400 IM, completing his 'B' final in 3:56.73.
The fourth and final day of this year's Patriot League Championships begins with preliminary swims at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
