Edwards Scores 18, But Leopards Hold Off Women’s Basketball On Senior Day

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland sophomore Laryn Edwards made all four of her 3-point attempts and finished with 18 points, but visiting Lafayette College held off the Greyhounds for a 76-65 Patriot League victory on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the game, the Greyhounds honored their four senior student-athletes – Alexis Gray, Stephanie Karcz, Hannah Niles and Molly Taylor – and two managers -- Rose Maisano and Gianna Mulhern – in a ceremony.

Edwards' 18 points were one off her career-high, and she also grabbed a career-best nine rebounds in 37 minutes of action.

Niles helped Loyola (7-19 overall, 4-11 Patriot League) trim a seven-point lead to three, 38-35, at halftime. She led the team with 10 points in the first half and finished with 14 overall. Niles made six free throws in the final three minutes of the first half, and she ended the game 10 of 10 at the line.

Lafayette (13-12, 9-6), however, came out and scored the first six points of the second half, and before the end of the third quarter the Leopards were up 54-43.

They extended the advantage to 16 twice in the fourth quarter, going up 63-47 on an Alexis Santarelli basket, but Loyola went on a 16-6 run to get within six, 69-63, when Edwards hit her second 3-pointer in as many possessions.

That was as close as Loyola would get, as it was held to two points the rest of the way while Lafayette went 6 of 7 from the free-throw line in the last 1:10.

Gray added 11 points and four assists for the Greyhounds in the defeat. Santarelli and Natalie Kucowski both scored 21 for Lafayette, while Kucowski also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Loyola plays its final home game of the regular-season on Wednesday, February 26, when it hosts the U.S. Naval Academy in a 5:30 p.m. game.
