Gray, McAteer Power Women’s Basketball to 64-54 Win over Navy

BALTIMORE – Alexis Gray scored a season-high 19 points, and Emily McAteer supplied 16 points off the bench in a 64-54 victory for Loyola University Maryland over Navy on Wednesday.

The Greyhounds (8-19, 5-11) complete their first season sweep of the Midshipmen (7-20, 2-14) since joining the Patriot League in 2013-14, and they have now won four-straight in the series overall.

Gray, whose previous season-best was a 17-point effort in Loyola's 50-44 win at Navy back on Feb. 1, hit 6 of 13 field goal attempts and 6 of 7 shots from the free throw line. McAteer came up just two points shy of her scoring high while draining 6 of 9 shots from the floor.

Hannah Niles added nine points in the victory, while Stephanie Karcz chipped in four points, six rebounds and four steals. Loyola shot 47.1 percent (24-51) from the floor and hit 42.9 percent (6-14) of its 3-point attempts.

The home side lead throughout at Reitz Arena, starting the contest on an 8-0 run until Navy finally got on the board with 4:19 left in the first quarter. The Mids pulled to within 19-17 midway through the second, but an Ashley Hunter layup began a 13-4 run for the Greyhounds which extended the lead into double figures at the intermission.

The score was 36-29 in favor of the home side when a Niles 3-pointer ignited a 9-0 spurt for Loyola midway through the third. The lead grew to as large as 20 points in the final quarter before a brief Navy surge in the closing minutes.

With her four steals on Wednesday, Karcz is up to 446 overall in her collegiate career. She passes Indiana State's Melanie Boeglin for 13th place all-time in Division I history, and she is within one theft of former UConn standout Nykesha Sales in 12th.

Gray has now reached double figures in four-straight games, and eight of the past 11 contests overall.

Mary Kate Ulasewicz poured in a game-high 26 points (6-9 3FG) for the visitors, with half of her total coming in the final 10 minutes of regulation.

Loyola hits the road for its final two regular season contests, beginning with a 4 p.m. matchup at Lehigh on Sunday afternoon.
