Anne Hayburn Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

2019-20 NCAA Women's Winter Postgraduate Scholarship Recipients

BALTIMORE – The NCAA has announced that Loyola University Maryland senior swimmer Anne Hayburn was one of a select group of student-athletes across the country to be awarded a $10,000 postgraduate scholarship.

A maximum of 42 scholarships (21 men, 21 women) were available across the three NCAA Divisions for the winter sports season. The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage graduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes. Athletics and academic achievements, campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership are evaluated when determining scholarship recipients.

Hayburn (Bowie, Md./St. Mary's) maintained a 4.0 grade-point average throughout her four years at Loyola. An accounting major and information systems minor, she was also extremely active on campus and through volunteer work while adding several accomplishments in the pool. Hayburn will remain at Loyola for graduate school, working towards a master's degree in accounting.

"What a great honor to cap off an amazing four years at Loyola," head coach Brian Loeffler said. "Annie has demonstrated tremendous excellence in the classroom, community and pool. I expect she will continue these accomplishments both in graduate school and beyond."

A repeat Academic All-Patriot League honoree this winter, Hayburn was a three-time individual and 11-time relay scorer at the conference championship meet. Her top individual effort was a 10th place showing in the 100 butterfly in 2019, while she was part of a bronze medal-winning 200 medley relay squad during her sophomore season. She scored on both the 200 and 400 free relays at this year's Patriot League meet.

On campus, Hayburn served as Vice President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, she was elected as a student government representative for athletics and she was a part of the Greyhound Leadership Academy. Hayburn was additionally a member of the Beta Alpha Psi, Omicron Delta Kappa, Betta Gamma Sigma (Sergeant-at-Arms), Alpha Sigma Nu and Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Societies.

Hayburn was also an active leader in the Junior H2ounds initiative, which teaches water safety skills and swimming techniques to underprivileged children in Baltimore. She was responsible for organization, scheduling and facilitation of the program and its partnership with Loyola's Center for Community Service and Justice. Hayburn was a Student Leadership Corps Mentor, a peer tutor, a Campus Ministry Lector/Eucharistic Minister and an active member of the Student-Athlete Pen Pal program and Club PALs.

Within her major, Hayburn received Loyola's Junior Accounting Achievement and Class of 2020 Business Achievement awards, and she received Business Leader awards from both T. Rowe Price and Brown Advisory.

The NCAA awards up to 126 postgraduate scholarships annually.  The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The one-time non-renewable scholarships of $10,000 are awarded three times a year corresponding to each sport season (fall, winter and spring).
