BALTIMORE – A pair of Loyola University Maryland rising seniors have had successful runs on the course over the last week as
Brandon Berry was the low amateur and second overall at the Delaware Open, and
Evan Brown made the cut to continue play at the Western Amateur.
Rising sophomore
Trent Geritz won the club championship at Loyola's home course, Country Club of Maryland, over the weekend.
Berry had two stellar rounds to finish the 54-hole event at 11-under par. He shot 6-under 66 to take the lead after the first day at The Peninsula Golf and Country Club in Millsboro, Delaware, before a 2-over 74 in the second round moved him back to second place.
He came back in the final 18 with the tournament's low round, a 7-under 65, to secure low amateur standing and finish second by eight strokes over the third-place finisher.
On Wednesday, Brown moved on in Western Amateur play in dramatic fashion, using an eagle on his final second-round hole to move securely inside the cut. He will play 36 holes on Thursday in the final day of stroke play. The top 16 players will then move on to match play competition.
Brown, who has also qualified for the U.S. Amateur next month, shot 1-under 71 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana, on Tuesday to end the day tied for 27
th. He was 1-over through 35 holes and a stroke over the projected cut line of even-par late Wednesday.
He parred the seventh and eighth holes – his 16
th and 17
th of the round – and then drilled his second shot to within eight feet on his final hole before rolling in an eagle putt to drop to even for the round and well inside the cut of the top 44 and ties at the prestigious amateur event.
