COLORADO SPRINGS – Two Loyola University Maryland swimmers,
Devin Cronin and
Max Verheyen, were named College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Honorable Mention this week, highlighting their success in the classroom and the pool in 2019-2020.
In February, Cronin and Verheyen were two of four Loyola swimmers to be named to their respective All-Patriot League First Teams.
Cronin became the first Loyola women's swimmer or diver to win an individual title at the Patriot League Championships since the Greyhounds joined the conference for the 2013-14 season. In February, she captured top honors in the 100-yard breaststroke, setting a school record and recording a NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:01.79 in the process.
The senior from Marshfield, Massachusetts, also was a finalist in the 200-yard breaststroke, taking eighth. She was a part of school-record setting 200- and 400-yard medley relays at the Patriot League Championships, too.
Cronin turned in a 4.0 grade-point average during the spring semester of 2020 and recently graduated from Loyola with a degree in elementary education.
Verheyen became Loyola's inaugural Patriot League Rookie of the Meet after posting three top-five finishes individually at the conference championships. He took second in the 200-yard individual medley with a school record and NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:45.95, and the next night he took down an eight-year old school record in the 400-yard individual medley with another 'B' time of 3:47.91.
The freshman from Baltimore wrapped up the meet with a fifth-place showing in the 200-yard breaststroke, and he was a part of school record performances in the 400-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays at the championships.
He wrapped up his freshman year as a standout in the classroom, too, putting together a grade-point average higher than 3.86.
