The Matchup

Last Time Out

  • Kelan Swales (2 G, 1 A) recorded his second five-point game of the season, leading the Loyola offense in a convincing 3-0 victory at Colgate last Saturday.
  • Justin Ingram added a pair of assists, while Albert Kang scored his second collegiate goal for the Greyhounds, who clinched a sixth-straight appearance in the Patriot League tournament.
  • Chase Vosvick made two saves, both in the second half, to pick up his sixth individual shutout of the season. Vosvick has allowed only four goals in 585 minutes of game action against conference opponents.
  • The Raiders (0-16-0, 0-7-0 PL) remained the only team without a result in Division I this season.

Playoff Scenarios

  • Loyola enters the weekend tied with Holy Cross for first place in the Patriot League standings with two games remaining in the regular season. Both teams have 15 points and identical 5-2 conference records; the Crusaders hold the head-to-head tiebreaker after winning 1-0 at Ridley on Sept. 25.
  • The Greyhounds can clinch a top-two seed and bye into the Patriot League semifinals with a victory over Army, an American loss or draw vs. Colgate and a Navy loss or draw vs. Bucknell.
  • Regardless of results elsewhere, Loyola would guarantee a top-four seed and at least one home game in the postseason with a victory this weekend.

Offensive Leaders

  • Justin Ingram (6 G, 9 A, 21 pts) and Kelan Swales (7 G, 3 A, 17 pts) have factored in 17 of Loyola's 23 goals on the year.
  • Ingram leads the conference and is tied for fourth nationally in assists. His 21 points are second in the PL and tied for 28th in DI. Ingram has totaled 16 points (5 G, 6 A) in Loyola's seven games against conference opponents.
  • Swales leads the team with three game-winning goals, all of which have come against conference opponents (Lehigh - 9/18, Boston U - 10/2, Colgate - 10/23). His seven goals rank second in the Patriot League and tied for 45th nationally.
  • Daniel Tshiani (3 G, 1 A) ranks third on the team with seven points after scoring the game-winning goal in recent victories over American and Navy. Albert Kang's strike at Colgate made him Loyola's eighth different goal scorer this season.
Series History
  • Army leads 4-3-1 in a series which began when Loyola joined the Patriot League in 2013.
  • The Greyhounds have won each of the last three regular season meetings, including a convincing 4-0 victory at Ridley in the most-recent matchup on Sept. 21, 2019.
  • Justin Ingram (1 G, 1 A) opened the scoring with a penalty kick, while Brian Saramago recorded his third collegiate hat trick in the win. Chase Vosvick made five saves to secure a clean sheet in goal.
  • Army's last victory in the series was a 1-0 win at Ridley in the 2018 Patriot League semifinals.
Scouting Army West Point
  • The Black Knights (7-6-1, 4-3 PL) snapped a four-game losing streak, including a three-game slide in conference play, with a 2-0 home victory over Holy Cross last Saturday. Army had dropped its previous three league games against Lehigh (2-1), Navy (3-0) and American (2-1).
  • Army's lone road victory this season was a 2-1 triumph at Bucknell on Sept. 25. The Black Knights are 6-2-0 at home and 1-4-1 at all other venues.
  • Sr. M Oscar Pereira (6 G, 6 A), Sr. F/M John Poncy (5 G, 2 A), Fr. F Andrew Guerra (4 G, 1 A) and Fr. F Brandon Bryant (4 G, 1 A) are the team's offensive leaders. Pereira ranks third in the conference in total points (18).
  • Army leads the Patriot League and ranks 32nd nationally in goals per game (2.00).

Defense Stepping Up in Patriot League Play

  • Loyola has posted shutouts in four of its five Patriot League victories this season, and the Greyhounds have allowed one goal or fewer in 6 of 7 conference games overall.
  • Loyola has allowed just four goals in its seven Patriot League games, three fewer than the next stingiest conference school (Boston University - 7).
  • Defensive contributors include Jacob Denison, Jordy Luchies, Kristinn Pétursson, Matthew Lala, Jonathan Sousa and Jake Mayer. Denison was honored as the PL Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Monday, Oct. 18.

Quick Notes

  • The Greyhounds are 7-0-1 this season when scoring multiple goals. They are also 6-0 when leading at halftime and 4-0 when they outshoot opponents.
  • Matthew Lala (2 G, 1 A) and Loc San (2 G, 1 A) are tied for fourth on the team in scoring with five points apiece.
  • Kevin Medrano and Kelan Swales are tied for second on the team with three assists apiece.
  • Seven Greyhounds have combined for 12 PL weekly awards this season, led by Chase Vosvick (4x Goalkeeper of the Week) and Justin Ingram (3x Midfielder of the Week).
  • Twenty different Loyola players, including seven of the program's 12 new additions to the roster for 2021, have started at least one game this season.
  • Jordy Luchies is the only Loyola player to start each of the season's first 15 games.

More on Vosvick

  • Chase Vosvick is a three-time United Soccer Coaches first team All-Region selection (2017-19) and a three-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year (2017-18, Spring 2021). He was also named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List prior to the 2021 spring season.
  • Vosvick has started 68 of Loyola's 75 games over the past four seasons, and is 39-22-6 with a 1.03 goals-against average, .720 save percentage and 26 solo shutouts in those 68 appearances.
  • This year, Vosvick is 7-5-1 with six shutouts, a 1.04 goals-against average and a .705 save percentage. Those six solo clean sheets rank him second in the Patriot League and tied for 17th overall in Division I.
Preseason Patriot League Honorees
  • Justin Ingram was voted in August to repeat as the Patriot League Midfielder of the Year. He is one of seven Greyhounds to return as a graduate student, taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to COVID-19.
  • Ingram was a first team United Soccer Coaches All-Region and first team All-Patriot League performer last spring after leading Loyola with nine points (3 G, 3 A).
  • All three of Loyola's Spring 2021 major award winners were recognized on the Preseason All-PL Team, with Ingram joined by Sam Brown and Chase Vosvick.
  • Brown was a second team United Soccer Coaches All-Region performer last season after ranking second on the team with six points (2 G, 2 A). He was the program's first Patriot League Offensive POY since Loyola joined the conference in 2013.
  • Vosvick is now a four-time Preseason All-League selection. He earned his third PL Goalkeeper of the Year honor in the spring after finishing 3-1-1 with a 0.92 goals-against average and .722 save percentage.
  • For a fourth time in the past five seasons, Loyola was projected to finish atop the Patriot League standings, as the Greyhounds (149 points, 10 first-place votes) edged American (137, 7) for the top spot in the conference's preseason poll.
Looking Ahead
  • Loyola concludes the regular season with a 7 p.m. matchup at Bucknell next Wednesday night.
