LAHAINA, Hawai'I – Loyola University Maryland's golf team registered five scored of 1-under or better on Friday, opening the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate with an 11-under 274 to tie for the second-best round in relation to par in school history.
Brandon Berry eagled two par fives during his round to shoot 6-under 65, good for second place a shot behind Boise State's Hugo Townsend.
As a team, the Greyhounds are fourth at the event, trailing three teams ranked in Golfweek's top 90. Kansas, which is ranked No. 10 in the nation, Boise State (50
th) lead the field at 16-under, while Colorado (90
th) is two shots ahead of Loyola.
The Greyhounds' round, while checking in at a tie for second in relation to par, is good for a tie for fifth in terms of total score.
Berry and the Greyhounds opened the shotgun start on the back nine where he recovered from a bogey-five on the 14
th to birdie the par-3, 202-yard 15
th to get back to level. He then birdied the 18
th hole before starting a scoring run on the fourth hole.
He birdied that before giving the stroke back with a bogey on the fifth. Berry then eagled the 460-yard, par-5 sixth hole and birdied the seventh before a par on the eighth hole. He then eagled the 485-yard, par-5 ninth hole to get to six under for his round.
Berry now has four rounds of 66 or better through 13 rounds this season, the most in a single-season by any Loyola player in school history.
Brett Inserra made a late push up the leaderboard for the Greyhounds after sitting at even through 12 holes. He had a birdie on the sixth hole before duplicating the feat on the eighth and ninth to get to 3-under for the day. A bogey on the 11
th, his final hole set him back to 2-under where he is tied for 22
nd.
Mike Crowley is also tied for 22
nd after shooting 2-under 69; he finished his round with birdies on two of his final four holes.
Nick Mejia and
Carlo Pizzano both shot 1-under 70 on Friday to tie for 30
th. Pizzano overcame a triple-bogey seven on the 18
th hole – his fourth – to post four birdies thereafter to get to 1-under. Mejia posted a birdie on the 10
th hole, along with the same score on the first and fourth holes.
Playing as an individual,
Connor McGarrity had four-straight birdies on the sixth through ninth holes to shoot 2-under on the front nine. He finished the day at 4-over 75.
The Greyhounds will resume the three-day tournament with the second round on Saturday.
