LAHAINA, Hawai'i –
Brandon Berry eagled two of his final eight holes Sunday and tied the Loyola University Maryland 54-hole record at 16-under par, winning the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate by one stroke at the Royal Ka'anapali Golf Course.
Berry holed out from a greenside bunker at the 324-yard, par-4 seventh hole, his 17
th of Sunday's round. That eagle tied him with Denver's Carson Griggs at 16-under through 53 holes of the tournament, taking them to the eighth hole with the tournament on the line.
Griggs and Berry were grouped in a foursome on Sunday, and played the 185-yard, par-3 eighth hole at the same time.
Berry rolled in a par putt, but Griggs bogeyed the hole to give the win to the Loyola graduate student. It was Berry's second collegiate win; he also won the 2021 Patriot League Championship.
Over the three-day tournament, Berry had rounds of 65, 66 and 66 to match Matt Oshrine's school record for 54 holes at 16-under par. Oshrine set the mark in 2014 at The Doc Gimmler. Berry now holds two of the three best tournament scores at Loyola after shooting 12-under earlier this month at the Georgetown Intercollegiate where he finished second.
At this tournament, Berry finished first amongst the 80-player field that included four players ranked in Golfstat's Top 90 nationally.
His Sunday round did not start well, however, as he double bogeyed the par-5 ninth hole. He was immediately 2-over, and he then played the course's back nine at even par with two birdies and a pair of bogeys.
He posted his first eagle of the round, and fifth of the tournament, on his 10
th hole of the day, the 519-yard, par-5 first hole to get level on Sunday.
Berry, who shot 8-under on the course's par fives during the three rounds, birdied three of the next five holes to drop to 3-under after the sixth hole, his 16
th of the day, to draw within two shots of Griggs.
He dropped in his second eagle, this out of the greenside bunker, on the seventh hole before putting out for par at the eighth for the win.
Berry added a pair of school records to his collection with his scoring. He now has six rounds of 66 or better this season, and seven in his career. Both break marks set by his former teammate, 2021 graduate
Evan Brown.
As a team, the Greyhounds finished ninth with a three-round total of 13-under 839. The total score ranks sixth-best in school history.
Mike Crowley shot an even-par 71 to finish tied for 39
th with a three-round, even-par total of 213.
Carlo Pizzano was a stroke behind at 1-over 214 after shooting 2-over 73 on Sunday.
Brett Inserra tied for 52
nd at 5-over 218 after shooting 5-over 76 on Sunday, and
Nick Mejia was tied for 55
th with a 6-over 219. Playing as an individual,
Connor McGarrity shot 3-over 74 on Sunday and finished tied for 59
th at 7-over 220.
