The Matchup

  • Loyola men's soccer concludes a stretch of five games out of seven away from home on Tuesday, as the Greyhounds travel to NJIT for a non-conference matchup beginning at 7 p.m.

Last Time Out

  • Kelan Swales scored his team leading fourth goal of the season in the 18th minute, while Jake Mayer and Justin Ingram added insurance strikes in the second half to lift Loyola to a 3-0 victory over Boston University on Saturday.
  • The Greyhounds posted their fourth straight win over the Terriers (1-7-1, 1-3-0 PL) and improved to 3-1 in their last four games overall. 
  • Mayer, Sean Graham and Jake Sweeney all picked up their first collegiate points in the victory, while Chase Vosvick made one save to record a second consecutive clean sheet in goal.
  • Graham and Ingram assisted on Swales' game-winner, with Swales able to tap a shot past goalkeeper Francesco Montali following a short cross by Ingram from the left side.
  • Sweeney then found Mayer for a 15 yard strike with just over 20 minutes remaining in the contest, and Ingram scored off a loose ball in the 88th minute to round out the scoring for the visitors.
Series History
  • Loyola earned a 4-1 home victory during the first meeting between the two sides on Oct. 15, 2019.
  • Josh Fawole, Barry Sharifi and Brian Saramago, along with an own goal, accounted for the Loyola offense.
  • NJIT, which finished the game with slim advantages in shots (18-15) and corners (5-4), avoided the shutout with 34 seconds remaining in regulation.
  • This is Loyola's lone matchup of the season against a member of the America East conference.
Scouting NJIT
  • The Highlanders (2-6-1) have dropped three straight games to La Salle (2-1), Albany (2-1) and New Hampshire (3-0) since opening America East play with a 2-1 OT victory over UMass Lowell on Sept. 18.
  • NJIT has allowed multiple goals in seven of nine games on the year; its 2.36 team goals-against average ranks last in America East and 190th out of 202 DI schools.
  • Fifth year forward Rene White, a second team All-American selection in 2019, leads the team and ranks 15th nationally in with 16 points (7 G, 2 A). His 0.78 goals per game are ranked eighth overall in DI.
  • The other victory for the Highlanders this fall came against Fairleigh Dickinson (4-1) in their season opener on Aug. 26.

Ingram, Swales, Vosvick Take Home Patriot League Weekly Awards

  • Loyola added three more Patriot League weekly awards to its season total on Monday, as Justin Ingram, Kelan Swales and Chase Vosvick were all recognized after contributing to a pair of 3-0 wins for the Greyhounds.
  • Ingram (Midfielder of the Week) and Swales (Offensive Player of the Week) earn weekly accolades after combining for 12 points in the two victories, while Vosvick is selected as Goalkeeper of the Week for a 10th time at Loyola after registering the 22nd and 23rd shutouts of his collegiate career.
  • Ingram totaled one goal and three assists for the Greyhounds. His one goal, one assist performance at Boston U was his third 3-point game in eight appearances this season, and he leads Loyola with 11 points (3 G, 5 A) on the year. Ingram's 0.62 assists per game lead the conference and are 14th overall in Division I.
  • Swales supplied seven points (3 G, 1 A) across the two victories. He had a career-high five points, the most by a Patriot League player this season, while helping the Greyhounds knock off William & Mary for the first time since 1998.
  • Vosvick totaled two saves while improving his season record to 4-2-1 with a 0.42 goals-against average and .870 save percentage. He ranks seventh in Division I in save percentage, and he is eighth nationally in GAA while leading the Patriot League in both categories.

Quick Notes

  • Gr. GK Chase Vosvick was one of 30 Division I men's soccer student-athletes across the country revealed last Thursday as a candidate for the 2021 Senior CLASS Award.
  • Twenty different Loyola players, including seven of the program's 12 new additions to the roster for 2021, have started at least one game this season. Jordan Wiley was the latest new addition to the starting lineup last Wednesday, when he totaled three points (1 G, 1 A) in a 3-0 win over William & Mary.
  • Matthew Lala (2 G) is one of three Greyhounds with multiple goals on the year. He had the game-winner in Loyola's season-opening 2-0 win over UC Irvine, and added a late equalizer in the second half of a 2-2 draw at Penn on Sept. 13.
  • Sean Graham and Jordy Luchies are the only two Loyola players to start each of the season's first nine games.

Greyhounds Earn Draw at No. 5 West Virginia

  • Chase Vosvick matched a career-high with seven saves, including several highlight-reel efforts, and Loyola was even in shots with nationally-ranked West Virginia for the final 65 minutes of a 0-0 draw between the two sides on Sept. 6.
  • West Virginia was coming off back-to-back victories over No. 3 Pittsburgh (2-1) and No. 17 Penn State (3-1), but was held off the scoresheet for the first time this season.
  • Shots were even at 6-6 after halftime, including a 5-4 edge for Loyola in the second half. Alex Bobocea played the final 1:05 in goal after Vosvick left due to injury.
  • Loyola was playing its first ranked opponent since earning a 1-1 draw at then-No. 2 Wake Forest back on Oct. 22, 2019.

Loyola Tops Patriot League Preseason Poll

  • For a fourth time in the past five seasons, Loyola has been projected to finish atop the Patriot League standings, as the Greyhounds (149 points, 10 first-place votes) edged American (137, 7) for the top spot in the conference's preseason poll.
  • Loyola returns all primary starters from the 2021 spring campaign, including the Patriot League's Offensive Player (Sam Brown), Midfielder (Justin Ingram) and Goalkeeper (Chase Vosvick) of the Year.
  • The Greyhounds are 32-12-5 overall against Patriot League opponents in the last five years under head coach Steve Nichols.
Preseason Patriot League Honorees
  • Justin Ingram was voted in August to repeat as the Patriot League Midfielder of the Year. He is one of seven Greyhounds to return as a graduate student, taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to COVID-19.
  • Ingram was a first team United Soccer Coaches All-Region and first team All-Patriot League performer last spring after leading Loyola with nine points (3 G, 3 A).
  • All three of Loyola's Spring 2021 major award winners were recognized on the Preseason All-PL Team, with Ingram joined by Sam Brown and Chase Vosvick..
  • Brown was a second team United Soccer Coaches All-Region performer last season after ranking second on the team with six points (2 G, 2 A). He was the program's first Patriot League Offensive POY since Loyola joined the conference in 2013.
  • Vosvick is now a four-time Preseason All-League selection. He earned his third PL Goalkeeper of the Year honor in the spring after finishing 3-1-1 with a 0.92 goals-against average and .722 save percentage.

  • Chase Vosvick is a three-time United Soccer Coaches first team All-Region selection (2017-19) and a three-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year (2017-18, Spring 2021). He was also named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List prior to the 2021 spring season.
  • Vosvick has started 62 of Loyola's 69 games over the past four seasons, and is 36-19-6 with a 0.96 goals-against average, .738 save percentage and 23 solo shutouts in those 62 appearances.
