EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. – After finishing the second round strong with a team score of 295 on Tuesday morning, the Loyola University Maryland golf team slipped two spots in the standings during the final 18 holes to finish in a tie for eighth at the 2021 Hamptons Intercollegiate at Maidstone Club.
The Greyhounds shot 13-over 301 in the final round to finish the tournament at 37-over 901.
Virginia, Georgia Tech and Northwestern shared the team title at the event that Loyola hosted for the second time at the Long Island club.
Brandon Berry led the Greyhounds with a three-round total of 4-over 220 to finish in a tie for 21
st place. He was at 1-over for his final round, and the tournament, through 15 holes on Tuesday afternoon, but a triple-bogey eight on the 16
th hole slid him back in the field.
Matt Malits had his best collegiate finish since the 2020-2021 opener, posting three-straight rounds of 2-over 74 to finish in a tie for 28
th. He was 2-over on the front nine of the course Tuesday before finishing with nine-straight pars to close the tournament.
Carlo Pizzano wrapped up the event with his best round of the tournament, shooting 4-over 76 and finishing the tournament with a birdie on the course's second hole to wrap up in a tie for 55
th.
Connor McGarrity and
Mike Crowley were 63
rd and 64
th, respectively, shooting 5-over and 3-over in the final round.
The Greyhounds' two individuals,
Brett Inserra and
Jackson Roman fared well in the final round, each shooting 1-over 73. Inserra finished in a tie for 47
th, while Roman was tied for 51
st in his first collegiate tournament. Roman had an eagle on the par-5 to put an exclamation point on his round.
Loyola is back in action next week when it participated in the Georgetown Intercollegiate at The Four Streams Club in Beallsville, Maryland, on October 10-11.
