The Matchups
  • Loyola women's basketball opens up its 14-game home schedule with a pair of matchups against George Mason and Fairleigh Dickinson this weekend.
  • Friday's 11:30 a.m. home opener vs. George Mason will be the team's annual Field Trip Day, with admission free for all fans and several local schools in attendance.

Last Time Out

  • Taleah Dixon's 13 points led four Loyola players in double figures, but a big run for Niagara early in the third quarter helped the Purple Eagles rally for an 81-71 victory in the season opener for both sides on Tuesday.
  • Dixon, Charia Roberts (11 points, eight rebounds), Bri Rozzi (11 points, five rebounds) and Lex Therien (10 points, six rebounds) led a balanced offensive performance.
  • Dixon hit 3 of 5 attempts from 3-point range, and Loyola shot 57.1 percent (8 for 14) from long distance overall, the program's best output since Jan. 24, 2018 in the first game under new head coach Danielle O'Banion.
  • Ally Haar led all scorers with 22 points (7-15 FG, 6-12 3FG) for Niagara, and she hit half of her 3-pointers during a 26-6 third-quarter run for the home side which turned a 48-29 deficit into a 55-54 lead.

Quick Notes from Niagara

  • Loyola's 71 points were the program's most since a 76-74 setback against Colgate on Jan. 8, 2019.
  • Charia Roberts set a new career high with her 11-point output, and her eight rebounds matched a career best. She played a team-high 32 minutes while making her first collegiate start on Tuesday.
  • The Greyhounds had three freshmen make their collegiate debuts, with Lex Therien and Laura Salmerón each cracking the starting lineup.
  • Therien played 31 minutes while contributing 10 points (4-9 FG) and six boards, while Salmerón totaled six points in 30 minutes of game action. Keegan Douglas added nine points (4-8 FG) in 23 minutes off the bench.
  • Caramina Tañedo (2-2 3FG, 2-2 FT) was perfect from the field while matching a career high with eight points.
  • The Greyhounds shot 78.9 percent (15 for 19) from the free throw line. Taleah Dixon was 4 for 4 from the charity stripe, while Bri Rozzi hit all three of her free throw attempts.
  • Loyola's 19-point lead early in the third quarter was the program's largest since they were up 20 in an eventual 64-54 win over Navy on Feb. 26, 2020.

George Mason Series History

  • George Mason leads 8-4 in a series which dates back to 1977.
  • The teams have met just two times since 1995. The Patriots won 80-72 at Reitz Arena on Nov. 14, 2017, and added a 70-38 home victory in the last meeting on Nov. 6, 2018.
  • Loyola's last win in the series was a 63-55 home triumph on Jan. 7, 1995. The Greyhounds would go on to finish 20-9 that season, winning the MAAC Championship and advancing to the NCAA tournament for a second-consecutive year.

Scouting George Mason

  • The Patriots (1-0) earned a 69-67 win at Florida International in their season opener on Tuesday night. Amaya Scott scored 16 points (8-10 FG), including the go-ahead FG with 1:46 remaining, while Jordan Wakefield had a team-high 17 points (8-8 FT).
  • George Mason is led by first-year head coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis, who joined the program after 13 years at Bethune-Cookman. A four-time MEAC Coach of the Year, she led the Wildcats to their first NCAA tournament appearance back in 2019.
  • The Patriots went 3-19 during the 2020-21 season, including an 0-14 mark in the Atlantic 10. They were ranked last out of 14 schools in this year's A-10 preseason poll.

Fairleigh Dickinson Series History

  • FDU leads 10-3 in a series which dates back to 1978.
  • The teams have played just once since 1989, with Loyola earning a 75-46 road victory during the last meeting on Nov. 13, 2019.
  • Laryn Edwards had a team-high 17 points (6-9 FG, 4-5 3FG), 2020 graduate Stephanie Karcz supplied 13 points, nine rebounds and six steals, and Emily McAteer (11 pts) reached double figures for the first time in her collegiate career.
  • Loyola forced 23 FDU turnovers and limited the home side to 30.8 percent shooting from the floor (16-52).

Scouting Fairleigh Dickinson

  • The Knights (0-1) fell 89-68 at St. John's in their season opener on Wednesday night. Jr. G Dahomée Forgues, a transfer from Robert Morris, poured in a career-high 26 points (9-14 FG, 6-8 3FG) in the setback.
  • FDU went 16-8 (12-6 NEC) during the 2020-21 season, falling to top-seeded Mount St. Mary's in the NEC semifinals. The 16 victories were the program's most since 1991-92 (23-6).
  • Gr. F Madison Stanley, who led the team in scoring (13.5 ppg), rebounding (6.0 rpg) and blocks (35) last season, was a Preseason All-NEC selection, while FDU was ranked fifth in the conference's preseason poll.

O'Banion Begins First Season in Charge

  • Danielle O'Banion was announced as the 12th head coach in program history on April 23, joining the Greyhounds after spending the past three seasons as an assistant at the University of Minnesots.
  • O'Banion brings over 20 years of Division I coaching experience to Baltimore. Her teams have combined for 10 postseason appearances, including five NCAA tournaments and one trip to the Final Four during her first stint with Minnesota in 2004.
  • Originally from Arlington, Virginia, O'Banion returns to the Mid-Atlantic after coaching stints at Minnesota, Memphis, Kent State and Harvard. A standout recruiter who has brought in four Top-50 classes during her career, she has also held multiple leadership positions within both the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Advocates for Athletic Equity (formerly Black Coaches and Administrators).
  • This will be O'Banion's second head coaching position, as she led Kent State's program from 2012-16.

Prepping for Patriot League Play

  • Friday's home opener will be the second of 11 non-conference games for the Greyhounds prior to their Patriot League opener against Army on Dec. 30.
  • Five of those contests will take place at Reitz Arena. After this week's homestand, Loyola hits the road for three straight games before hosting Mount St. Mary's (12/4) and Morgan State (12/8) in early December.
  • Loyola was ranked ninth out of 10 schools in this year's Patriot League preseason poll. The Greyhounds went 8-22 (5-13 PL) during their last full season of competition in 2019-20.

Five Newcomers Join Program for 2021-22

  • Loyola's 16-member roster includes five freshmen who will be making their collegiate debuts this winter.
  • Lex Therien becomes the third Therien sister to compete for the Greyhounds, joining current junior Ava Therien and 2021 graduate Isabella.
  • Lex was a two-time All-State performer at Cherokee HS in New Jersey, leading the team to a 92-10 record and ranking third in program history with 1,283 points.
  • Therien and fellow freshman Keegan Douglas were named co-South Jersey Players of the Year during their senior high school seasons.
  • Douglas totaled 1,624 points at Haddonfield HS while helping the program win three Colonial Conference championships. She was chosen as the confernce's Player of the Year in each of her final two seasons.
  • Laura Salmerón joins Loyola after playing two seasons in Spain's second division basketball league. Salmerón, who also competed internationally for Spain's U-15 team, was a three-star ESPN recruit who received a 90 scouts grade.
  • Jonelle Price was a key contributor at Neumann-Goretti HS in Philadelphia, helping the program win a PIAA Class 3A state title.
  • Vanessa Stolstajner joins the Greyhounds as a walk-on. She was a two-time All-State performer at Cromwell HS in Connecticut, winning a Class A state title in 2019

Smart Hounds

  • Loyola posted a team grade-point average of 3.35 during the 2020-21 academic year. Kayla Sieper (3.97), Laryn Edwards (3.66), Devyne Newman (3.54) and Bri Rozzi (3.54) all have cumulative GPA's above a 3.50.
  • The program has a history of academic excellence, as the Greyhounds were named to the WBCA Division I Academic Top 25 Honor Roll for five-straight seasons from 2016-20.
  • Loyola was one of just three schools nationally to crack the top 15 academically in each of those five years.

More on O'Banion

  • New head coach Danielle O'Banion was a four-year letterwinner at Boston College from 1997-2001, helping the Eagles earn their first two NCAA tournament appearances in program history.
  • O'Banion has also overcome adversity off the court, as she was diagnosed with Stage 2 lymphoma cancer midway through her coaching stint at Kent State.
  • She managed to coach every game while going through treatment, and she announced that her cancer was in remission six months after the diagnosis. O'Banion was presented with the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Pat Summitt Most Courageous Award for women's basketball at the 2016 Final Four.

Looking Ahead

  • Loyola concludes its homestand with a 7 p.m. matchup against local rivals UMBC on Wednesday.
