The Matchup

  • Loyola men's soccer begins NCAA tournament play on Thursday, as the Greyhounds travel to North Carolina for the first meeting between the two sides since the 1987 NCAA quarterfinals.
  • Loyola is making its ninth overall appearance in the Division I tournament (first since 2009) after winning the program's first Patriot League Championship last Saturday.

Last Time Out

  • Justin Ingram scored the game-winning goal on an 83rd minute free kick, and Chase Vosvick made a diving save in the closing seconds to seal a 2-1 victory over American in Saturday's Patriot League final.
  • After four-straight regular season titles and a first-place finish in the South division last spring, Loyola claimed the program's first postseason championship since joining the conference in 2013.
  • Ingram (1 G, 1 A) recorded his fifth 3+ point game of the season, as his corner kick set up Loyola's opening goal by Kelan Swales in the 15th minute.
  • David Coly scored American's lone goal in the 32nd minute, ending Loyola's longest shutout streak in 10 years at 420:03 minutes.
  • Vosvick, who had three saves overall in the victory, was announced as the Patriot League Tournament MVP after the game. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Ingram, Swales and defender Jordy Luchies.

Lockdown Defense

  • Loyola enters the NCAA tournament with 10 shutouts on the year, the program's most in a season since 2008, and the Greyhounds have allowed one goal or fewer in 14 of 19 contests.
  • Loyola posted six-straight shutouts against Patriot League opponents from Oct. 12 through Nov. 9, keeping conference teams off the scoreboard for 639:58 consecutive minutes prior to American's first-half goal on Saturday.
  • Four-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year Chase Vosvick has tallied a career-high nine shutouts this season (tied for fifth in Division I), and he also played 109 out of 110 minutes in a scoreless draw at then-No. 5 West Virginia in September.
  • Vosvick is 10-5-2 overall on the year with a 0.84 goals-against average and .736 save percentage. Against conference opponents, he posted a microscopic 0.46 GAA with a .808 save percentage.

Quick Notes

  • The Greyhounds are 8-0-1 this season when scoring multiple goals. They are also 7-0 when leading at halftime and 7-0-1 when they outshoot opponents.
  • Justin Ingram (7 G, 10 A) and Kelan Swales (8 G, 4 A) have factored in 20 of Loyola's 27 goals on the year.
  • Daniel Tshiani (3 G, 1 A), Matthew Lala (2 G, 2 A) and Loc San (2 G, 1 A) rank third through fifth on the team in scoring.
  • Loyola posted shutouts in six of its seven Patriot League victories this season, and the Greyhounds allowed one goal or fewer in 8 of 9 conference games overall.
  • Loyola allowed just four goals in its nine regular season Patriot League games, six fewer than the next stingiest conference school (Bucknell - 10).
  • Nine Greyhounds combined for 15 PL weekly awards this season, led by Chase Vosvick (5x Goalkeeper of the Week) and Justin Ingram (3x Midfielder of the Week).
  • Twenty different Loyola players have started at least one game this season.
Series History
  • North Carolina has won two of the previous three meetings, including a 1-0 victory in Baltimore during the 1987 NCAA quarterfinals.
  • The other two matchups occurred nearly 75 years ago, as UNC earned a 3-2 win back in 1948 while Loyola prevailed 4-0 during the first meeting in 1947.
  • The Greyhounds' last two games against ACC opposition both came against Wake Forest, as they played to a 1-1 draw with the then-No. 2 Demon Deacons on Oct. 22, 2019 before dropping the rematch by a 7-0 final this fall.
  • Loyola's last win against an ACC opponent was a 2-1 victory over Pittsburgh on Sept. 20, 2016.
Scouting North Carolina
  • The Tar Heels earned an at-large bid to the national tournament and enter Thursday with a record of 11-6-1 (4-4-1 ACC). UNC fell 2-1 to Clemson in the ACC quarterfinals in its most-recent game on Nov. 7.
  • This will be the program's 28th NCAA tournament appearance, a history which includes a pair of national championships (2001, 2011).
  • UNC reached its ninth College Cup (and its seventh in the last 13 years) during the Spring 2021 season, falling 1-0 to eventual national champions Marshall in the NCAA semifinals.
  • Ten of UNC's 11 victories this fall have come via shutout. Gr. GK Alec Smir (0.93 GAA, .691 save%) was announced last week as a first team All-ACC performer.
  • Tego Ikoba (6 G, 2 A), Santiago Herrera (5 G, 3 A), Cameron Fisher (5 G, 2 A) and Milo Garvanian (4 G, 2 A) lead the offense.

Vosvick, Ingram, Nichols Earn Major Patriot League Awards

  • Loyola accounted for half of the Patriot League's six major awards this year, as Chase Vosvick earned Goalkeeper of the Year accolades, Justin Ingram repeated as Midfielder of the Year and Steve Nichols was voted as Coach of the Year for a fourth time in six seasons.
  • Vosvick became the first player in conference history to receive four major awards in his storied career, and he is also now a five-time All-Patriot League performer.
  • Ingram leads the conference in both points (24, 7 G, 10 A) and assists. His 10 assists are tied for eighth nationally, while his 24 points are 34th in Division I. He has recorded multiple points in 9 of 19 appearances on the year.
  • Nichols was voted by his peers as the conference's Coach of the Year for a fourth time after he was previously recognized three-straight seasons from 2016-18.
  • Loyola is 38-13-6 overall against conference opponents during the past six years under Nichols, a 1992 Loyola graduate who rejoined the program as head coach in 2014.

Five Greyhounds Named All-Patriot League

  • Major award winners Chase Vosvick and Justin Ingram were joined by Jordy Luchies and Kelan Swales as first team All-Patriot League performers, while Jacob Denison took home third team honors for a second-straight season.
  • Loyola's four first-team selections were the most in the conference.
  • Luchies is the only player to start all 19 games this season. He has logged a team-high 1702 minutes on the backline while helping the Greyhounds record 10 shutouts for the first time since 2008.
  • Swales repeats as a first team selection after tying for the conference-lead with eight goals on the year. He is also second on the team in both assists (4) and points (20).
  • Denison also played a key role in Loyola's defensive success. He returned to the starting lineup in late September after a brief stint as a reserve, ultimately starting 14 games this fall and helping the Greyhounds post shutouts in nine of those 14 starts.

More on Vosvick

  • Chase Vosvick is a three-time United Soccer Coaches first team All-Region selection (2017-19) and a four-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year (2017-18, Spring 2021, 2021). He was also named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List prior to the 2021 spring season.
  • Vosvick has started 72 of Loyola's 79 games over the past four seasons, and is 42-22-7 with a 0.98 goals-against average, .726 save percentage and 29 solo shutouts in those 72 appearances.
  • With the eighth of his nine solo shutouts this season, a 1-0 win at Bucknell to conclude the regular season, Vosvick became the Patriot League's all-time leader in career shutouts.

Over the Hump

  • After seeing its season end in the Patriot League semifinals as a top-two seed in each of the past five years, Loyola finally reached the championship game after advancing past Army West Point 7-6 on penalties following a scoreless draw last Tuesday.
  • The Greyhounds were a perfect 7 for 7 in the shootout, with Jacob Denison providing the deciding penalty kick in the seventh round. Justin Ingram, Kelan Swales, Daniel Tshiani, Jordy Luchies, Matthew Lala and Kevin Medrano were also successful from the penalty spot.
  • Loyola then picked up its first win in Patriot League tournament play during Saturday's final against American. The Greyhounds, who have held advantages in both shots and corner kicks in each of their previous five playoff games, are now 1-4-2 lifetime in the Patriot League tournament.

  • Loyola is back in the NCAA tournament for the first time since winning the program's 12th and final MAAC championship back in 2009.
  • The Greyhounds have made eight previous trips to the Division I tournament, including back-to-back quarterfinal appearances in 1986-87 and a run to the Sweet 16 in 2001.
  • The program also made seven-straight Division II tournaments during the 1970's. The 1976 squad finished 21-1 overall and topped New Haven 2-0 in the Division II Championship game.
  • Loyola's last tournament victory was a 2-0 triumph over Liberty in the first round back in 2007.
