The Matchup
  • Loyola women's basketball hits the road for three-straight games, beginning with a Saturday afternoon contest at Hofstra.
  • The Greyhounds will be looking for their first three-game winning streak since March, 2019.

Last Time Out

  • Bri Rozzi scored 10 of her 13 points in the second half, and Lex Therien finished one rebound shy of a second-straight double-double, as Loyola stormed back from a 14-point deficit in the second half to pull out a 63-57 win over UMBC on Wednesday.
  • The Greyhounds came back from 14 points down for the first time since January 2, 2017 (60-55 over Lafayette), and they overcame a 14-point second-half deficit for the first time since Feb. 10, 2012 (66-60 over Iona).
  • Rozzi and Therien had 13 points apiece, while Laura Salmerón (12 points, eight rebounds, four assists) and Charia Roberts (12 points, seven rebounds) also reached double figures for the home side.

Balanced Attack

  • Loyola has used the same starting lineup in each of the first four games - Taleah Dixon, Charia Roberts, Bri Rozzi, Laura Salmerón and Lex Therien - and those five have combined for 13 double-digit scoring performances.
  • All five starters are averaging between 9.8 and 11.8 points per game. The highest scoring total for any player was Salmerón's 15-point effort in last Sunday's overtime win over Fairleigh Dickinson.
  • Roberts leads the starters in field goal percentage (48.6, 17-35), while Rozzi is shooting 43.8 percent (7 for 16) from 3-point range.

Series History

  • This will be the first meeting between the two sides since Feb. 2, 1994, a 62-45 win for Loyola at Reitz Arena.
  • The Greyhounds have a 2-0 lead in the series, as they added a 73-59 victory at Hofstra back on March 1, 1993.
  • This will be Loyola's first game against a CAA opponent since Dec. 4, 2018 (L, 62-57 at Towson). Loyola's last win over a CAA school was a 52-44 victory over Towson on Nov. 25, 2012.

Scouting Hofstra

  • The Pride (1-1) picked up their first victory of the season on Wednesday, edging out a 52-51 win over Division II Molloy. Jr. G Sorelle Ineza had 10 points, including the go-ahead basket off a steal with 45 seconds remaining in regulation.
  • Hofstra won on Wednesday despite shooting 27.0% (17 for 63) from the field and 14.3% (4 for 28) from 3-point range.
  • Hofstra, which was ranked fifth out of 10 schools in the CAA preseason poll, dropped its season opener 70-41 at Albany.
  • Sr. G JaKayla Brown, who ranked fourth in the CAA in scoring last season (16.3 ppg), was a second team Preseason All-CAA selection. She has led the Pride in scoring in each of the first two games, including a 14-point effort in the win over Molloy.

Quick Hits from UMBC

  • After trailing 37-23 with 7:20 remaining in the third quarter, six different players scored during a 19-3 Loyola run to end the frame.
  • The Greyhounds ultimately shot 66.7 percent (8 for 12) from the field in the third.
  • Bri Rozzi matched her career scoring high with 13 points, and she became the first Greyhound to play the entire game since Jan. 5, 2020 (Laryn Edwards vs. Lehigh).
  • Lex Therien's 13 points were a new season high. She hit 6 of 11 field goal attempts, and six of her nine rebounds came on the offensive end.
  • Loyola ended the night with a 38-27 advantage on the glass overall. The Greyhounds have out-rebounded their opponent in each of their two victories.
  • Charia Roberts reached double figures for a second time this season while scoring a career-high 12 points. She hit 6 of 8 field goal attempts in the win.
  • Laura Salmerón set season highs in rebounds (8), assists (4) and minutes played (36).
  • The Greyhounds shot 36.8 percent (7 for 19) from 3-point range, led by Rozzi (3 for 6) and Salmerón (3 for 7).
  • Loyola shot 56.5 percent (13 for 23) from the field in the second half, outscoring UMBC by a 42-28 margin after the intermission.

Clutch at the Line

  • Loyola hit 10 of 13 free throws in the fourth, including each of its last six attempts, to close out Wednesday's victory over UMBC.
  • Taleah Dixon (6 for 6) and Bri Rozzi (4 for 4) were both perfect from the charity stripe.
  • Dixon (91.7%, 22-24) ranks seventh nationally in free throws made, and she is third in the Patriot League in free throw percentage. Rozzi follows at 85.7 percent (12 for 14) on the year.
  • Loyola has shot over 70 percent from the free throw line in each of its first four games this season. The Greyhounds are shooting 76.3 percent (58 for 76) from the line overall.

Down to the Wire

  • Loyola has had fourth quarter leads in each of its first four games this season, with the Greyhounds breaking through for victories in their last two contests.
  • After trailing 44-34 through three quarters of last Friday's home opener vs. George Mason, Loyola used a 17-3 run to jump ahead 51-47 with 2:18 remaining.
  • The Patriots would recover to score the game's final six points, including a game-winning putback with five seconds left to escape with a 53-51 win.
  • The Greyhounds also led by as many as 19 points in the second half of their season opener at Niagara. Loyola took a 62-60 advantage into the fourth quarter of that contest before the Purple Eagles pulled away late to hand the visitors an 81-71 setback.

Worth Noting

  • Taleah Dixon, Laryn Edwards and Bri Rozzi are Loyola's three team captains for the 2021-22 season.
  • Lex Therien's double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds) in last weekend's win over FDU was the program's first since her older sister Isabella totaled 16 points and 11 boards in last year's Patriot League quarterfinal at Bucknell.
  • Loyola's 68-59 OT win over FDU was the program's first in overtime since Jan. 2, 2017 at Lafayette. The Greyhounds are now 3-9 in OT dating back to March 4, 2011.
  • The Greyhounds' 71 points in their season opener at Niagara were the program's most in a game since Jan. 8, 2019.

Prepping for Patriot League Play

  • Saturday's road matchup will be the fourth of 11 non-conference games for the Greyhounds prior to their Patriot League opener against Army on Dec. 30.
  • Loyola is on the road for three straight games before hosting Mount St. Mary's (12/4) and Morgan State (12/8) in early December. The non-conference schedule concludes with trips to Toledo (12/11) and St. Francis Brooklyn (12/23).
  • Loyola was ranked ninth out of 10 schools in this year's Patriot League preseason poll. The Greyhounds went 8-22 (5-13 PL) during their last full season of competition in 2019-20.

Smart Hounds

  • Loyola posted a team grade-point average of 3.35 during the 2020-21 academic year. Kayla Sieper (3.97), Laryn Edwards (3.66), Devyne Newman (3.54) and Bri Rozzi (3.54) all have cumulative GPA's above a 3.50.
  • The program has a history of academic excellence, as the Greyhounds were named to the WBCA Division I Academic Top 25 Honor Roll for five-straight seasons from 2016-20.
  • Loyola was one of just three schools nationally to crack the top 15 academically in each of those five years.

O'Banion Begins First Season in Charge

  • Danielle O'Banion was announced as the 12th head coach in program history on April 23, joining the Greyhounds after spending the past three seasons as an assistant at the University of Minnesots.
  • O'Banion brings over 20 years of Division I coaching experience to Baltimore. Her teams have combined for 10 postseason appearances, including five NCAA tournaments and one trip to the Final Four during her first stint with Minnesota in 2004.
  • Originally from Arlington, Virginia, O'Banion returns to the Mid-Atlantic after coaching stints at Minnesota, Memphis, Kent State and Harvard. A standout recruiter who has brought in four Top-50 classes during her career, she has also held multiple leadership positions within both the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Advocates for Athletic Equity (formerly Black Coaches and Administrators).
  • This will be O'Banion's second head coaching position, as she led Kent State's program from 2012-16.

Looking Ahead

  • Loyola remains on the road for a 2 p.m. matchup at Georgetown next Wednesday. Loyola will then have a week off before another trip to Washington, D.C., to face Howard on December 1.
