The Matchup

  • Loyola men's soccer, which has won its last four Patriot League games by a combined margin of 9-0, wraps up the regular season with a midweek trip to Bucknell.
  • The Greyhounds are looking to clinch a fourth regular season championship in the last five seasons, while the Bison were eliminated from playoff contention after a 1-0 defeat at Navy on Sunday.

Last Time Out

  • Jonathan Sousa's first goal of the season was a big one, as he tapped in a cross from Matthew Lala in the 94th minute to send Loyola to a 1-0 victory over Army West Point on Senior Day at Ridley Athletic Complex.
  • The Greyhounds moved into sole possession of first place in the Patriot League standings with the win, and they improved to 4-1 in their last five meetings against the Black Knights (7-7-1, 4-4-0 PL).
  • Sousa, who was one of nine Greyhounds recognized pregame, scored his third-career Patriot League game-winner on a goal assisted by both Lala and Jordy Luchies.
  • Loyola had a 13-1 advantage in shots and a 4-0 lead in corner kicks during the second half and overtime.
  • Chase Vosvick made three saves to pick up his seventh solo shutout of the season.

Playoff Scenarios

  • Loyola enters Wednesday with 18 points in Patriot League play, two ahead of both Holy Cross (at Boston U at 6 p.m. Wednesday) and American (vs. Navy at 1 p.m.).
  • The Greyhounds can clinch the No. 1 tournament seed with a victory. They could also clinch the top spot with a draw or loss if both Holy Cross and American fail to win.
  • Should the three teams finish tied with 19 points apiece, Holy Cross would be No. 1, Loyola No. 2 and American No. 3 based on results between the teams during the regular season.
  • The Greyhounds would guarantee a top-two seed and a bye into the semifinals with a draw. They can finish no lower than third in the regular season standings.

Offensive Leaders

  • Justin Ingram (6 G, 9 A, 21 pts) and Kelan Swales (7 G, 3 A, 17 pts) have factored in 17 of Loyola's 24 goals on the year.
  • Ingram leads the conference and is tied for seventh nationally in assists. His 21 points are second in the PL and tied for 41st in DI. Ingram has totaled 16 points (5 G, 6 A) in Loyola's eight games against conference opponents.
  • Swales leads the team with three game-winning goals, all of which have come against conference opponents (Lehigh - 9/18, Boston U - 10/2, Colgate - 10/23). His seven goals rank second in the Patriot League and tied for 61st nationally.
  • Daniel Tshiani (3 G, 1 A) ranks third on the team with seven points after scoring the game-winning goal in recent victories over American and Navy. Jonathan Sousa's strike vs. Army made him Loyola's ninth different goal scorer this season.
Series History
  • Bucknell leads 7-2-0 in a series which dates back to 2005.
  • Loyola, though, has won each of the last two meetings, including a 2-1 victory at Bucknell in the Spring 2021 regular season finale.
  • Loc San and David Gunter had first-half goals in the victory, which clinched first place for Loyola in the Patriot League South division standings during the COVID-impacted campaign.
  • A 64th minute goal by Jonathan Sousa secured a 1-0 road win for Loyola on Oct. 2, 2019, the program's first victory over the Bison.
  • Bucknell's last win in the series was a 1-0 triumph at Ridley on Oct. 3, 2018.
Scouting Bucknell
  • The Bison (4-9-3, 2-4-2 PL) are 0-3-1 in their last four games, with their lone result during that span a scoreless draw at Boston University on Oct. 23.
  • Bucknell's lone conference victories this season were 1-0 decisions over Lehigh (9/23) and Colgate (10/9).
  • Eleven of the program's 16 games this season have been played on the road. Bucknell is 1-3-1 at home, with the one victory a 2-1 triumph over Mount St. Mary's on Sept. 10.
  • The Bison are ranked ninth in the Patriot League in both goals scored (0.75) and goals allowed (1.71) per game.

Defense Stepping Up in Patriot League Play

  • Loyola has posted shutouts in five of its six Patriot League victories this season, and the Greyhounds have allowed one goal or fewer in 7 of 8 conference games overall.
  • Loyola has allowed just four goals in its eight Patriot League games, four fewer than the next stingiest conference school (Navy - 8).
  • Defensive contributors in front of goalie Chase Vosvick include Jacob Denison, Jordy Luchies, Kristinn Pétursson, Matthew Lala, Jonathan Sousa and Jake Mayer. Sousa was honored as the PL Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in his career on Monday, while Vosvick (12-time GK of the Week) and Luchies (Rookie of the Week) were also recognized following Saturday's win vs. Army.

Quick Notes

  • The Greyhounds are 7-0-1 this season when scoring multiple goals. They are also 6-0 when leading at halftime and 5-0 when they outshoot opponents.
  • Matthew Lala (2 G, 2 A) and Loc San (2 G, 1 A) rank fourth and fifth on the team in scoring with six and five points, respectively.
  • Kevin Medrano and Kelan Swales are tied for second on the team with three assists apiece.
  • Nine Greyhounds have combined for 15 PL weekly awards this season, led by Chase Vosvick (5x Goalkeeper of the Week) and Justin Ingram (3x Midfielder of the Week).
  • Vosvick is 6-2 with a 0.53 GAA and .800 save percentage vs. Patriot League opponents, allowing just four goals in 678 minutes during conference play.
  • Twenty different Loyola players, including seven of the program's 12 new additions to the roster for 2021, have started at least one game this season.
  • Jordy Luchies is the only Loyola player to start each of the season's first 16 games.

More on Vosvick

  • Chase Vosvick is a three-time United Soccer Coaches first team All-Region selection (2017-19) and a three-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year (2017-18, Spring 2021). He was also named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List prior to the 2021 spring season.
  • Vosvick has started 69 of Loyola's 76 games over the past four seasons, and is 40-22-6 with a 1.01 goals-against average, .724 save percentage and 27 solo shutouts in those 69 appearances.
  • This year, Vosvick is 8-5-1 with seven shutouts, a 0.96 goals-against average and a .723 save percentage. Those seven solo clean sheets rank him second in the Patriot League and tied for ninth overall in Division I.
Preseason Patriot League Honorees
  • Justin Ingram was voted in August to repeat as the Patriot League Midfielder of the Year. He is one of seven Greyhounds to return as a graduate student, taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to COVID-19.
  • Ingram was a first team United Soccer Coaches All-Region and first team All-Patriot League performer last spring after leading Loyola with nine points (3 G, 3 A).
  • All three of Loyola's Spring 2021 major award winners were recognized on the Preseason All-PL Team, with Ingram joined by Sam Brown and Chase Vosvick.
  • Brown was a second team United Soccer Coaches All-Region performer last season after ranking second on the team with six points (2 G, 2 A). He was the program's first Patriot League Offensive POY since Loyola joined the conference in 2013.
  • Vosvick is now a four-time Preseason All-League selection. He earned his third PL Goalkeeper of the Year honor in the spring after finishing 3-1-1 with a 0.92 goals-against average and .722 save percentage.
  • For a fourth time in the past five seasons, Loyola was projected to finish atop the Patriot League standings, as the Greyhounds (149 points, 10 first-place votes) edged American (137, 7) for the top spot in the conference's preseason poll.
Looking Ahead
  • Loyola will begin Patriot League tournament play either Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals or next Tuesday in the semifinals.
