HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Sorelle Ineza sank a field goal in the corner as time expired, helping Hofstra overcome another fourth-quarter rally by Loyola University Maryland to send the Greyhounds to a tough 55-53 defeat on Saturday.
Loyola (2-3) scored eight-unanswered points, capped by a 3-pointer from
Bri Rozzi with 1:57 remaining, to pull ahead 53-52 after trailing by seven. The Pride (2-1) went 1 for 2 at the free throw line to tie the score with 37 seconds left, and a defensive stop on the other end set up Ineza's game-winner.
Lex Therien (12 points, 13 rebounds) recorded her second double-double in the past three games for the Greyhounds, while
Taleah Dixon added 14 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Of Therien's season-high 13 boards, six came on the offensive end as Loyola led 37-30 overall on the glass.
JaKayla Brown led all scorers with 20 points (4-6 3FG), and Jaylen Hines chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds for Hofstra.
The first half was full of extended runs for both sides. Loyola fell behind 9-0 to start the contest before scoring 11-straight points, capped by a 3-point play from Dixon, to take an 11-9 lead. The Pride responded with a 19-3 stretch to take their largest lead of 14 points at 28-14 with 8:09 left in the second quarter.
The Greyhounds reduced that deficit down to 33-24 at the intermission, and they shot 46.7 percent from the field while outscoring the home side 19-7 in the third quarter. Therien led the way with six points and seven rebounds during that frame, as Loyola took a 43-40 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Hofstra had the game's next run, scoring 12 of the next 14 points to move in front 52-45 prior to Loyola's late rally. The Greyhounds have held fourth quarter leads in each of their first five games to begin the season.
Laura Salmerón added 13 points and five rebounds on the afternoon, while Rozzi finished with eight points, four rebounds and three steals.
Therien (4-7 FG, 4-4 FT) and Dixon have both reached double figures in 4 of 5 games to begin the year. Dixon's 14 points matched a season best.
Loyola remains on the road next Wednesday, traveling to Georgetown for a matchup beginning at 2 p.m.
