The Matchup

  • Loyola men's soccer returns to the Patriot League semifinals for a sixth-consecutive season on Tuesday, as the top-seeded Greyhounds host No. 6 Army West Point.
  • The winner will face either No. 2 American or No. 5 Navy in Saturday's championship game.

Last Time Out

  • Jake Sweeney scored the game's only goal late in the first half, and Loyola's defense did the rest in a 1-0 win at Bucknell to wrap up yet another Patriot League regular season championship last Wednesday.
  • The Greyhounds have topped the Patriot League standings in each of the last four non-COVID impacted seasons, and they were also first in the South division standings during the shortened season last spring.
  • Loyola has now posted five-straight shutouts against Patriot League opponents, the program's longest run in conference play since 2007, and the Greyhounds' nine overall clean sheets this season are their most in a regular season since 2008.
  • Kelan Swales assisted on the game-winner by Sweeney, who became Loyola's 10th different goal scorer this season.

Milestone Clean Sheet for Vosvick

  • Wednesday's victory included a major milestone for Chase Vosvick, as he became the Patriot League's all-time leader in shutouts with his 28th career clean sheet.
  • Vosvick moved ahead of Adam Edwards, who played at Bucknell from 2002-05. He has tallied a career-high eight shutouts so far this season (tied for seventh in Division I), and he also played 109 out of 110 minutes in a scoreless draw at then-No. 5 West Virginia in September.
  • Vosvick is 9-5-1 overall on the year with a 0.90 goals-against average and .729 save percentage. Against conference opponents, he holds a microscopic 0.47 GAA with a .810 save percentage, and he enters the postseason on a 273:03 scoreless streak.

Vosvick, Ingram, Nichols Earn Major Patriot League Awards

  • Loyola accounted for half of the Patriot League's six major awards announced last week, as Chase Vosvick earned Goalkeeper of the Year accolades, Justin Ingram repeated as Midfielder of the Year and Steve Nichols was voted as Coach of the Year for a fourth time in six seasons.
  • Vosvick became the first player in conference history to receive four major awards in his storied career, and he is also now a five-time All-Patriot League performer.
  • Ingram is recognized after ranking among the conference leaders in goals (6), assists (9) and points (21). His nine assists are tied for seventh nationally, while his 21 points are second in the conference and 52nd in Division I.
  • Ingram has recorded multiple points in 8 of 16 appearances on the year.
  • Nichols is voted by his peers as the conference's Coach of the Year for a fourth time after he was previously recognized three-straight seasons from 2016-18.
  • Loyola is 37-13-5 overall against conference opponents during the past six seasons under Nichols, a 1992 Loyola graduate who rejoined the program as head coach in 2014.
Series History
  • The Greyhounds have won four of the last five meetings in a series which is now even at 4-4-1.
  • Army has just one victory in the series since 2015, a 1-0 win at Ridley in the 2018 Patriot League semifinals.
  • Current senior Oscar Pereira set up Keenan O'Shea for an 82nd minute winner in that contest, the lone playoff meeting between the two sides.
  • Jonathan Sousa provided a 94th minute OT winner during a 1-0 Loyola victory in this year's regular season meeting on Oct. 30.
  • Jordy Luchies and Matthew Lala assisted on Sousa's first goal of the season.
  • Loyola had commanding leads in shots (13-1) and corner kicks (4-0) during the second half and overtime.
Scouting Army West Point
  • The Black Knights (8-7-2, 4-4-1 PL) upset third-seeded Holy Cross by a 1-0 final on Saturday to advance to the semifinals. Oscar Pereira's team-leading seventh goal of the season accounted for the game's only offense in the 71st minute.
  • Army qualified as the No. 6 seed after rallying from a 2-0 deficit to draw 2-2 at Lafayette in the regular season finale, with John Poncy and Andrew Guerra both scoring in the final 11 minutes of regulation.
  • Pereira (1st team), Sr. GK Jacob Suppiah (2nd team) and Poncy (3rd team) were all announced as All-Patriot League performers last week. Suppiah has started 13 of 17 games in goal, where he is 6-5-1 with a 1.36 GAA and .710 save percentage. Pereira (7 G, 6 A) and Poncy (6 G, 2 A) are the team's offensive leaders.

Five Greyhounds Named All-Patriot League

  • Major award winners Chase Vosvick and Justin Ingram were joined by Jordy Luchies and Kelan Swales as first team All-Patriot League performers, while Jacob Denison took home third team honors for a second-straight season.
  • Loyola's four first-team selections were the most in the conference.
  • Luchies is the only player to start all 17 games this season. He has logged a team-high 1502 minutes at center back while helping the Greyhounds record nine regular season shutouts for the first time since 2008.
  • Swales repeats as a first team selection after leading the Greyhounds and ranking tied for third in the conference with seven goals on the year. He is also second on the team in both assists (4) and points (18).
  • Denison also played a key role in Loyola's defensive success. He returned to the starting lineup in late September after a brief stint as a reserve, ultimately starting 12 games this fall and helping the Greyhounds post shutouts in eight of those 12 starts.

Lockdown Defense in Patriot League Play

  • Loyola posted shutouts in six of its seven Patriot League victories this season, and the Greyhounds allowed one goal or fewer in 8 of 9 conference games overall.
  • Loyola allowed just four goals in its nine Patriot League games, six fewer than the next stingiest conference school (Bucknell - 10).
  • The Greyhounds have held conference opponents off the scoreboard for 498:30 consecutive minutes entering Tuesday's semifinal, with the last goals allowed during a 2-1 defeat to Lafayette on Oct. 9.

Quick Notes

  • The Greyhounds are 7-0-1 this season when scoring multiple goals. They are also 7-0 when leading at halftime and 6-0 when they outshoot opponents.
  • Justin Ingram (6 G, 9 A) and Kelan Swales (7 G, 4 A) have factored in 18 of Loyola's 25 goals on the year.
  • Daniel Tshiani (3 G, 1 A), Matthew Lala (2 G, 2 A) and Loc San (2 G, 1 A) rank third through fifth on the team in scoring.
  • Nine Greyhounds combined for 15 PL weekly awards this season, led by Chase Vosvick (5x Goalkeeper of the Week) and Justin Ingram (3x Midfielder of the Week).
  • Twenty different Loyola players have started at least one game this season.

More on Vosvick

  • Chase Vosvick is a three-time United Soccer Coaches first team All-Region selection (2017-19) and a four-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year (2017-18, Spring 2021, 2021). He was also named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List prior to the 2021 spring season.
  • Vosvick has started 70 of Loyola's 77 games over the past four seasons, and is 41-22-6 with a 1.00 goals-against average, .725 save percentage and 28 solo shutouts in those 70 appearances.
  • This year, Vosvick is 9-5-1 with eight shutouts, a 0.90 goals-against average and a .729 save percentage. Those eight solo clean sheets rank him second in the Patriot League and tied for seventh overall in Division I.
Postseason History
  • Loyola is searching for its first NCAA tournament appearance since winning the program's 12th and final MAAC championship back in 2009.
  • The Greyhounds have made eight trips to the Division I tournament overall, including back-to-back quarterfinal appearances in 1986-87 and a run to the Sweet 16 in 2001.
  • Loyola is 0-4-1 lifetime in Patriot League tournament play, including a 3-2 setback to American in the Spring 2021 semifinals. Goals from Justin Ingram and David Gunter helped the Greyhounds rally from a 2-0 second half deficit, but David Coly scored an 82nd minute game-winner for the visitors.
  • American scored twice in the first 39 minutes against a Loyola defense that was missing three starters, including Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year Chase Vosvick.
  • The Greyhounds played to a 0-0 draw against Lafayette in the semis during their last full season in 2019, with the Leopards ultimately advancing 5-4 on penalty kicks.
  • Loyola has held advantages in both shots and corner kicks in each of its previous three Patriot League semifinal matchups.
Looking Ahead
  • If the Greyhounds advance, they would host the Patriot League Championship game at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
