ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Trailing by 14 with under five minutes remaining, Loyola University Maryland mounted a furious comeback to pull within two before coming up just short in a 50-46 defeat at Navy on Sunday.
Isabella Therien had a team-high 17 points for the Greyhounds, including eight during a 14-2 run which reduced the visitors' deficit to 48-46 in the final minute. Loyola had the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead, but the Midshipmen got a defensive stop and hit a pair of free throws to seal the win with four seconds remaining.
Jennifer Coleman led Navy (4-6 overall, 4-2 PL, 3-1 South) with 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Kolbi Green added 13 points and eight boards.
Therien reached double figures for a fourth-straight game while also supplying five rebounds, three assists and two steals for Loyola.
Emily McAteer chipped in 12 points and a pair of blocks, and
Charia Roberts set season-highs in both points (7) and rebounds (8).
The Greyhounds held a 25-16 lead with under three minutes remaining in the first half, getting off to a strong start for a second-consecutive afternoon. Navy, though, closed the second quarter on an 8-0 run and stifled the Loyola offense during a 30-7 run which spanned 20:11 of game action.
Loyola trailed 46-32 with 4:22 left in regulation when back-to-back layups by Therien and
Taleah Dixon began the late offensive surge. The Mids were able to prevail despite shooting 33.9% (21-62) from the field and 17.4% (4-23) from 3-point range.
Therien is now averaging a team-high 13.0 points per game on the year, while McAteer has scored 10+ points in 6 of 8 appearances. McAteer hit 5 of 9 field goal attempts overall and 2 of 4 shots from long distance.
Loyola (0-8, 0-4 South), which has four games remaining in the regular season, begins a weekend series with American at 4 p.m. next Saturday in Washington, D.C.
