ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Loyola University Maryland volleyball won the third and fourth sets Saturday to push the match to a deciding fifth, but the U.S. Naval Academy came away with a win in the final stanza for the second day in a row, claiming the match, 25-23, 25-9, 21-25, 18-25, 15-10.
Abby Hamilton had 17 kills to lead Loyola, while
Lauren Link posted her second double-double in as many days with 11 kills and an equal number of digs.
The Greyhounds hit -.192 in the second set and scored only nine points, but they turned things around to swing at a .262 clip with 15 kills and only four errors in the third.
In the fourth, Loyola had only 10 kills, but four Greyhounds blocks contributed to Navy hitting -.023. Loyola won the set by seven, 25-18, forcing the deciding frame.
Navy scored the first five points of the fifth, forcing a Loyola timeout after a block by Celie Feighery and Maggie Bodman. Out of the break, the Greyhounds scored twice in a row when
Caitlin Churney sided out with a kill and she teamed with
Mackenzie Fedota for a Loyola block.
Feighery sided out for the Mids with a kill, but the Greyhounds reeled off three in a row, getting within a point, 6-5, after two Navy attack errors. The second miscue sent Navy calling a timeout, and the Mids responded with three-consecutive points.
Loyola would not get closer than three at that point. Fedota sided out with a kill to make it 13-10 Navy, but the Mids picked up the last two points to close out the match.
Churney finished with seven kills, and
Megan Bukala had six to go with six blocks.
Katie Forsythe had 19 digs, and
Alex Fisher and
Alaina Acchione combined for 31 assists.
