BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland volleyball ended a 28-match losing streak to 16-time Patriot League Champion American University on Friday night, beating the Eagles, 25-17, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20.
Cat Vaccaro and
Abby Hamilton each had 16 kills for the Greyhounds, while
Katie Forsythe and
Mackenzie Fedota both added 10.
The win was the Greyhounds' first over American since September 26, 1992. Each of the last three matches between the teams had gone five sets during 2018 and 2019.
Loyola had not played a match in 20 days and was missing several players who had seen considerable action in its first two contests of the year, but a revamped lineup scratched out a .180 hitting percentage while holding the Eagles to .153.
The Greyhounds also scored 12 points off service aces and had 75 digs in the match.
Vaccaro's 16 kills eclipsed her previous career-high of 13 set during her freshman year in an August 24, 2018, win over Siena College.
Forsythe, the two-time defending Patriot League Libero of the Year, played all six rotations for the first time in her collegiate career, and she posted a double-double with 10 kills and 21 digs. She entered Friday with five kills in 63 previous matches.
Corinne Filograna started at libero for the first time and had a career-high 24 digs to go with four service aces to lead all players.
Ashley Dwyer had 27 assists, and
Alex Fisher 21 for the Greyhounds. Hamilton added a double-double, logging 13 digs with her 16 kills.
The Greyhounds will be back in action Sunday afternoon when they host Lehigh University at 2 p.m.
