Navy Withstands Men’s Basketball Rally For Win In Regular-Season Finale

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The U.S. Naval Academy scored 10 of the second half's first 12 points to take a 39-25 lead just over four minutes into the period, but Loyola University Maryland held the Midshipmen scoreless for the next six-plus minutes and went on a 12-0 run to get within two. Navy, however, fought off the charge and ended Sunday's Patriot League game with a 66-58 decision in Alumni Hall.

Loyola forced four Navy turnovers and held the Midshipmen to 0 of 6 from the field over the stretch in which Cam Spencer and Santi Aldama combined for seven of the Greyhounds' points.

Patrick Dorsey momentarily stemmed the run with a free throw at 9:21 for the Midshipmen's first points since the 15:54 mark, and Greg Summers had a basket and free throw less than 40 seconds later to push Navy to a six-point lead, the same as it held at the half.

Jaylin Andrews quickly knocked down his second 3-pointer of the game to make it a one possession game again, but Navy scored the next five and was up by six or more for more than two minutes.

Golden Dike drove the left side and put away a two-handed dunk off the dribble at 5:02, and Aldama made two free throws at 4:29 to get the Loyola deficit back to two, 48-46, but John Carter, Jr., had a traditional 3-point play for the Midshipmen to push the lead back to five with 4:06 on the clock.

Nineteen ticks later, Aldama canned a three off an Andrews assist to bring Loyola back within two, 51-49, but Navy scored eight of the next nine points and led 59-50 with 57 seconds remaining.

Aldama scored a game-high 21 points, while Spencer and Andrews each had 11 for the Greyhounds. Carter led Navy with 16 points.

The Greyhounds will enter the Patriot League Championships with a road game on Wednesday, March 3, at either Boston University or College of the Holy Cross.
