BALTIMORE – Juniors
Reid Hussey and
Jonathan Brooks each won three individual events to lead the Loyola University Maryland men's swimming and diving team past Villanova by a 189-99 final, while the women's team dropped a 183-112 decision to the Wildcats at Mangione Pool on Saturday afternoon.
Hussey, a two-time Patriot League Men's Swimmer of the Week this season, finished first in the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.41), the 500 freestyle (4:38.38) and the 200 individual medley (1:53.05) to lead the men's team to the win. He also swam the final leg on the victorious 400 free relay to finish off the meet.
Brooks, who also swam on the 400-free relay, posted wins in the 100 backstroke (51.07), the 200 back (1:51.36) and the 100 fly (0:50.20).
In the 100 back, Brooks helped Loyola win three of the first four spots as
Mark Boran was second (51.94) and
Casey Brown took fourth place (53.00). In the 200 back, Brooks, Boran and Brown led the Greyhounds to a sweep of the top three spots as Boran (1:51.59) was second and Brown (1:53.85) was third.
Junior
Jimmy Hayburn was also a double winner for the Greyhounds. He took first place in the 50 free with a time of 20.93 seconds while teammate
Conor Rutigliano was second (21.58) and sophomore
Sean Keller was third (22.11).
In the 100 free, Hayburn and Rutigliano also finished one-two. Hayburn won the event with a time of 46.56 that just beat out Rutigliano (46.77). Sophomore
John Nguyen finished third with a mark of 47.30.
Sophomore
Dylan Champagne also had a strong meet for the Greyhounds. He took first in the 1000 free (9:45.78) and finished second behind Hussey in the 500 free (4:48.75).
Nguyen won the 200-free (1:42.75) while
Josh Walker was fourth (1:49.05).
Junior
David Sears did well in the breaststroke events. He finished first in the 100 breast (58.50) and was runner-up in the 200 (2:10.23). Senior
Brett Legambi was second in the 100 breast (58.79) and third in the 200 (2:10.46).
Freshman
Ryan Atwood had several strong races. He was runner-up in the 200 fly (1:53.52) to Hussey and was fourth in the 200 breast (2:13.41). Atwood also took third place in the 100 fly (52.44).
The Greyhounds also won both relay events. Boran, Sears, Hayburn and Rutigliano led Loyola to a first place finish in the 400 medley relay, leading off the meet with a time of 3:27.02. In the 400-free relay, Nguyen, Hayburn, Brooks and Hussey won the event with a time of 3:07.61.
The men's team is now 3-2 on the season.
Senior
Emma Schouten led the Loyola women's team in its loss to Villanova. Schouten was a double winner in the meet, taking first in both breaststroke events. In the 100 breast, her time of 1:04.40 enabled her to finish one-two with teammate
Abby Andrews (1:05.89). In the 200 breast, she had a time of 2:20.23 as Loyola took three of the top four places. Andrews was third (2:25.21) and
Allison Wade took fourth (2:25.91).
Junior
Elizabeth Walsh contributed one first-place finish and a pair of second-place showings to the Greyhounds' effort. Walsh won the 200 back (56.93), just ahead of teammate
Maggie Manchester, who was second (58.92).
Walsh finished second in the 100 fly with a time of 57.03 while
Molly Davis was third (59.55) and
Michelle Lebed was fourth (59.85). Walsh also took second place in the 200 IM (2:07.74).
Junior
Lauren Joyce finished first in the 200 back and was third in the 500 free. She won the 200 back with a time of 2:06.65 while Manchester finished fourth (2:09.22). Joyce took third in the 500 free with a time of 5:11.22. Joyce also took fourth place in the 200 free (1:57.10).
In the 50 free,
Faith Tyranski was fourth with a time of 25.10 and Lebed was fifth (25.18). Davis was also the runner-up in the 200 fly (2:04.08).
Villanova swept the top three spots in both diving events.
Jessica Stolfi took fourth in the three-meter diving with 192.44 points. Stolfi was also fourth in the one-meter diving with 197.32 points.
In the 400 medley relay that started the meet, the Greyhounds squad of Tyranski, Schouten, Walsh and
Sarah Abril took second place with a time of 3:56.16.
With the loss, the Loyola women's team dropped to 2-3 on the season.
Both the men's and women's teams go on the road next Saturday as they visit La Salle for a meet beginning at 1 p.m.
