BALTIMORE – Kyle Hellmann leveled up the score with 76 seconds remaining in regulation, and he provided the game-winner 5:35 into overtime to help American rally past Loyola University Maryland by a 2-1 final at Ridley Athletic Complex on Saturday.
Sam Brown opened up the scoring for the Greyhounds (0-1, 0-1 PL) in the 40th minute, as Loyola returned to game action for the first time since Nov. 12, 2019. The Eagles (2-1, 2-1 PL) had the game's final six shots after the home side had a 15-0 advantage through 70 minutes.
The Greyhounds dominated possession in the first half, with
Danilo Seglio generating multiple scoring chances in his Loyola debut. The junior transfer from Lincoln Memorial forced a diving save out of goalie Jake Agnew in the 16th minute and hit the crossbar on a header just over five minutes later.
After another strong effort from Kristinn Pétursson was turned aside by Agnew in the 34th minute, Brown broke the deadlock not long afterwards.
Matthew Lala, making his first collegiate start on the backline, found junior transfer
Kelan Swales streaking down the left side. Swales then sent a cross towards Brown in the center, and his shot deflected off an American defender before bouncing off the left-hand post into the back of the net.
The goal for Brown, a 2018 second team All-Patriot League honoree, was his seventh at Loyola. The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead into the intermission after a last-minute penalty kick for the home side hit off the post.
Loyola was reduced to 10 men with 35:58 left in regulation.
Chase Vosvick made three saves in goal prior to Hellmann's late equalizer in the 89th minute.
The game-winner came off an attempted clear in front, as Hellman sent the ball into an open net after the initial effort into the box was turned aside.
The Greyhounds remain at Ridley Athletic Complex next Saturday, hosting defending Patriot League champions Lehigh at 1 p.m.
