BALTIMORE – Freshman
Lily Mead set Loyola University Maryland school records in both the 50-yard backstroke and 100 back, and the Greyhounds won 29 of 32 events overall in a dual sweep of American on Saturday.
Mead's 50 back mark of 25.57 came during the first leg of Loyola's victorious 200 medley relay to begin the afternoon. It is the fastest time in the Patriot League this season, and it was well under
Emily Koegl's 2018 time of 26.18. Her 100 back time of 55.87 bested the previous Loyola record of 55.93 set by
Elizabeth Walsh in 2018, and she also added a season-best time of 2:19.14 in the 200 breaststroke which ranks fifth overall in the conference.
Max Verheyen added three individual wins, while
Conor Rutigliano,
Caleb Kelly and
Jack Still added a pair of victories to lead the Greyhound men, who won by a final team score of 203-80. The margin on the women's side was 179.5-113.5.
The men won 15 of 16 events, and had at least the top two finishers in 14 events. Verheyen's individual wins came in the 100 breast (55.94), 200 breast (2:04.78) and 400 individual medley (3:57.92). That 400 IM time is now ranked fourth overall in the Patriot League. Verheyen was followed by
David Sears (58.42) in the 100 breast,
Brett Legambi (2:08.41) in the 200 breast) and
Josh Walker (4:13.92) in the 400 IM.
Rutigliano swept the back events for Loyola, as his 100 back time of 50.42 beat out teammate
Mark Owens (55.23) while his 200 back mark of 1:54.33 bested
Matt Voight (1:57.36) in second place.
Kelly won both sprint free races. His time of 20.70 was just ahead of
Reid Hussey (20.97) in the 50 free, and his time of 46.12 placed him ahead of
Jonathan Brooks (47.05) in the 100 free.
Still and
Dan Faunce finished 1-2 in the diving competitions. Still scored 253.79 points in the 1-meter and 267.98 points in the 3-meter, while Faunce registered scores of 218.77 (1-meter) and 223.20 (3-meter).
John Nguyen (500 free, 4:46.80) and
Dylan Champagne (1650 free, 16:10.69) touched the wall first in the distance free events, as they bested teammates
Casey Brown (500 free, 4:50.23) and
Zach Reid (1650 free, 17:13.41).
Loyola also had the top two finishers in the 200 free, with
Colin Anderson (1:42.78) out-touching Legambi (1:43.95). Hussey added a Greyhound victory in the 100 butterfly (50.12), while
Sung Lee took second place in the 200 fly (1:59.01).
Rutigliano, Verheyen, Brooks and Kelly recorded a first-place time of 1:30.86 in the 200 medley relay, and the 200 free relay group of Hussey, Kelly,
Jimmy Hayburn and Rutigliano closed out the afternoon with a winning mark of 1:22.19.
Mead contributed to four event wins overall for the Loyola women. She teamed with
Emma Schouten, Walsh and
Megan Dickey in the 200 medley relay (1:46.64), and she was joined by Walsh,
Claire Bowser and Dickey in the 200 free relay (1:38.23).
The Greyhounds had at least the top two finishers in 10 events overall.
Molly Davis registered two of Loyola's 14 victories, as she touched the wall first in the 200 fly (2:04.68) and 500 free (5:14.39).
In the 50 free, Dickey (24.47) was followed by
Sarah Abril (25.64), while
Izzy Barnette (53.66) and Walsh (54.02) topped the field in the 100 free. Barnette was also second to Mead in the 100 back with a mark of 59.98. Abril added an event win in the 200 free, posting a time of 1:56.82 which beat out Bowser (1:58.01) in second.
Elizabeth Fetherston took first place in the 1650 free, as her time of 18:03.97 was 13 seconds ahead of
Maggie McCann (18:17.00) in second.
Schouten (1:06.41) topped Walsh (1:07.28) in the 100 breast, and her time of 2:25.58 was good enough for second place in the 200 breast.
Lauren Joyce was victorious in the 400 IM (4:36.25) and Andress added a second-place showing in the 100 fly (59.38).
Jessica Stolfi and
Anna Donato posted victories in the diving events. Stolfi (213.44) edged out Donato (209.62) in the 3-meter, while Donato (219.66) bested Stolfi (212.55) in the 1-meter.
Loyola will compete in a Patriot League virtual meet next weekend, with the first of three sessions taking place on Friday night.
