88th Minute Winner Sends Women’s Soccer Past Colgate in Spring Opener

BALTIMORE – Ada Clare Tempert scored her first collegiate goal early in the second half, and her cross with 2:33 remaining was deflected in by a Colgate defender to lift Loyola University Maryland to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Raiders on Monday.

The own goal took place 43 seconds after Colgate had equalized off a free kick, allowing the Greyhounds to come out on top in their spring season opener.  Loyola picked up its first victory over Colgate (1-1) since Oct. 24, 2015, snapping a four-game losing streak in the series.

Neither goalkeeper was required to make a save during a balanced opening half, as the Raiders held a slim 4-3 edge in shots heading into the intermission. Loyola came out strong to start the second half, earning three corner kicks in the first six minutes and nearly taking the lead when a dipping shot from Claire Beath was turned aside by goalkeeper Sophia Boggs.

Tempert broke the deadlock shortly afterwards, as she was led into a 1-on-1 situation by Sarah Bayer and slid a shot past a charging Boggs into the back of the net. The former 2019 Gatorade Maryland Girls Soccer Player of the Year, Tempert was making her collegiate debut after missing her freshman season due to injury.

The Greyhounds locked down defensively after moving in front, as Colgate was held without a second-half shot until the 78th minute and Paige Sim was not required to make her first save until the 81st minute.

The Raiders' equalizer came against the run of play with 3:16 left, with Ruby Diodati sending a low shot under the wall and into the left corner.

Tempert's pressure quickly put Loyola back ahead. Her cross from the right side was attempting to find Sabrina Daglish in front before Colgate's attempted clear was directed into the top right corner.

The Raiders did not manage a shot in the closing seconds of regulation. The Greyhounds have now held opponents to one goal or fewer in 13-straight games dating back to the 2019 season.

Loyola remains at Ridley Athletic Complex next Saturday, hosting Bucknell in a Patriot League matchup at 7 p.m.
