SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – The Loyola University Maryland golf team sits second out of 13 teams at the Donald Ross Collegiate Classic at Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club.
Play on Monday got off to a late start after a frost delay, and teams completed the first round, plus much of the second. Competition will continue Tuesday with a shotgun start in the morning that will roll directly into the third and final round.
Loyola golfers finished at least 11 holes of the second round and are cumulatively 8-over for the tournament, two shots back of UNC Greensboro and four in front of Elon and Florida A&M.
The Greyhounds got off to a fast start and had three players at even or below par through 13 holes in the first round before struggling on the final five. The team combined for five bogeys and an equal number of double bogeys on holes 14 through 18 to finish the round at 14-over 302 and in fifth overall.
Thus far, the second round has been much more kind on the scorecards through at 11 or 12 holes as the team is 6-under for the round.
Matt Malits and
Evan Brown are tied for eighth at the tournament with matching scores of 1-over. Malits shot 74 in the first round and is not 1-under in the second through 12 holes, while Brown carded a 75 and is 2-under through 11.
Brandon Berry is close behind while tied for 13
th. He shot 74 over the opening 18 holes and is 2-over through 11 in the second.
Turner Foster has played through 12 holes in the second round at 3-under and is tied for 30th, rebounding after shooting 81 in the first.
Brett Inserra shot 79 in the first round and is 5-over through 11 in the second to tie for 59th.
Trent Geritz is playing as an individual at the event and is tied for 49
th overall through 12 holes in the second round. He shot 79 in the first and is 3-over in the second.
