SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Three players shot 2-under or better on Tuesday, and the Loyola University Maryland golf team won the Donald Ross Collegiate Class by strokes strokes at Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club.
Evan Brown (-3),
Brandon Berry (-2) and
Matt Malits (-2) combined to shoot 7-under on the 6,723-yard, par-72 course in the final round.
As a team, the Greyhounds were 2-under during the final 18 and overtook second-round leader UNC Greensboro to finish 11-over for the tournament. The Spartans finished second at 18-over, while Richmond was third a stroke back.
Brown tied for fourth overall at 1-under with rounds of 75-71-69, while Malits had sixth to himself with rounds of 74-72-70 to shoot even par for his best collegiate finish. Berry tied for seventh at 2-over (74-74-70).
Turner Foster tied for 58th, and
Brett Inserra was 69th.
Trent Geritz played as an individual and tied for 63
rd.
Loyola opened the day just over midway through the second round – Monday's start was delayed due to frost – and in second place at 8-over. Through 18 holes, the Greyhounds were 13-over and three shots back of UNC Greensboro.
Berry, Brown and Malits all had strong front nines to put Loyola in striking distance of the Spartans.
Brown was bogey-free at the turn with birdies on the fourth and eighth holes, while Berry was 3-under. He had a pair of bogeys that were cancelled out by an eagle on the par-4 fourth hole, and he also stroked a trio of birdies. Malits rebounded from bogeys on the first and fourth holes to birdie three-straight from six through eight.
Berry had a birdie on the 11th before a double bogey on the 12th and bogey on the 15th. Be birdied the par-4 16th to get back to 2-under for the round.
Brown, meanwhile, continued to roll in pars with six in a row between nine and 14. He birdied the 15th and 17th holes before a bogey on the final hole of the day set his score at 3-under.
Malits had a bogey-free back nine with seven pars and birdies at the 13th and 16th holes to finish at 2-under 70, his best collegiate round.
The win is the Greyhounds' first since the 2017 Patriot League Championships and the eighth since 2011 when
Chris Baloga became head coach.
