ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Katie Herrmann scored the game's only goal 7:52 into the second half, and Navy held off Loyola University Maryland in the closing seconds to earn a 1-0 victory in the Patriot League semifinals on Wednesday.
The Mids (4-4-1) advance to the conference final for a second-straight season, while the Greyhounds end the spring with a final record of 3-2-1.
Navy goalkeeper Mattie Gallagher made a lunging save on a
Gillian Borton shot which was heading under the crossbar with 1:19 remaining, and
Nicole Rivas had a free kick attempt just outside the box blocked in the final minute to prevent a late Loyola comeback attempt.
Both teams were limited to one shot on goal in the first half, as
Paige Sim made a diving stop on Navy's Victoria Tran in the 10th minute and
Kaleigh Gallagher had an attempt saved 17:26 into the contest.
Emily Keast set up the lone goal in the 53rd minute, as she fed the ball to Herrmann at the top of the box for an unstoppable shot into the top right corner.
Ada Clare Tempert and
Julia Gray also forced saves out of Gallagher in the second half after Herrmann's opener. The Mids finished the night with a 9-5 edge in shots and a 6-1 lead in corner kicks.
The Greyhounds see their season end in the Patriot League final four for a second-consecutive year, and they surrendered just three goals overall in 563 minutes of game action.
Navy will face either Boston University or Colgate in Saturday's conference final.
