Tennis Teams Split With Howard

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland women's tennis dropped just a single doubles match on Friday, going on to a 7-0 victory over Howard University, while the Bison men edged the Greyhounds, 4-3, at the McClure Tennis Center.
 
Loyola picked up the women's doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 2. Kateri Martin and Abigail Thornton defeated Yemisi Ifederu and Hana El Sherif, 6-2, at the top spot, and Olivia Tracy and Anna Rico posted a 6-3 win over Alexandra Blackman and Emnet Simvnyola at No. 2.
 
Howard got its lone win at No. 3 doubles as Kendall Addison and Aria Ragas topped Brooke Santoriello and Genevieve Wurtz, 6-2.
 
In singles action, the Greyhounds won all six matches with Thornton and Tracy using three sets for their victories. Thornton rallied to beat El Sherif, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 2, while Tracey outlasted Blackman, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3 at No. 3.
 
Martin dispatched Ifederu, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1, and Rico was a 6-2, 6-0 winner against SImunyola. Abby Decker used a tiebreaker in the first set to go on to a win, 7-6 (5), 6-3, against Addison, and Sandra Aguirre beat Ragas, 6-1, 6-2.
 
In the men's contest, Matt Cardano and Oliver Davey swept Phoenix Williams and Pierce Westbrook, 6-0, at No. 3 doubles, but the Bison won the other team matches to pick up the key point. Roger Lyn and Romani Mayers beat Skyler Gates and Benny Glezer, 6-1, at No. 1, and Justin Cadeau and Gabe Knowles topped Edik Pribitkin and Charlie Shanker, 6-2, at No. 2.
 
The Greyhounds got three singles wins at the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions, all in straight sets.
 
Shanker topped Knowles, 6-3, 6-1, and Cardano was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Williams at No. 5. Davey took down Westbrook, 7-5, 6-2, at NO. 6.
 
Cadeau and Mayers each had three set wins for the Bison to support the narrow team victory. Cadeau edged Gates, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 1, and Mayers topped Pribitkin, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2, at No. 3. Lyn was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Glezer at No. 2.
