Brown Rolls To Six-Shot Victory At Rutherford Intercollegiate

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Loyola University Maryland senior Evan Brown set a tournament scoring record at Penn State University's Rutherford Intercollegiate, shooting a three-round total of 11-under 202 to win the event by six strokes.

Brown posted three rounds of par or better at the 7,202-yard, par-71 Blue Course, going 71-65-66 to break the previous best of 10-under 203 by Penn State's Charles Huntzinger from 2016.

As a team, the Greyhounds tied for second at 7-over 859, matching the score of 38th-ranked Kent State University as the two finished seven strokes back of the host Nittany Lions. Loyola and the Golden Flashes were three shots up on Rutgers University, four on the University of Maryland and six on the University of Connecticut.

Brandon Berry earned his second-straight top-5 finish, his third overall this season, by shooting 1-under 70 on Sunday to finish tied for fifth at 3-under 210.

Carlo Pizzano was 2-over 73 on Sunday and tied for 39th at 9-over, while Brett Inserra tied for 51st. Mike McCarthy gave the Greyhounds three players in the top-60, tying for 59th overall.

Brown started Sunday leading the field at 6-under, a score that would have ended up winning, but he dropped his second-straight round of 5-under or better.

The Kennett Square, Pennsylvania native birdied the second, fifth, seventh and ninth holes while rolling in five pars on the front nine to make the turn at 4-under. He then posted a birdie on the 631-yard par-5 12th hole to get to five under, and he birdied a pair of par fours on the 13th and 15th holes. Bogeys on the final two holes brought him back two strokes to 5-under for his round, but his victory was still comfortably secured.

Brown's win is the second of his career; he won the 2019 Loyola Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Arizona.

Brown and Berry were one-two in the 75-player field in birdies, posting 16 and 13, respectively, during the 54-hole event. Brown led all players in scoring on par fours, shooting 7-under, while Berry led players on the par fives with the same score as Brown was 4-under.

The Rutherford Intercollegiate was the last regular-season event for the Greyhounds who will next compete in the 2021 Patriot League Championships. The 54-hole tournament will take place May 1-2 at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis, Maryland.
