LEWISBURG, Pa. –
Lily Mead contributed to five school records, and she and
Max Verheyen both posted times which top the Patriot League standings overall on the year, as Loyola University Maryland got off to a strong start on the first day of its Patriot League Challenge meet with American and Bucknell to conclude the 2021 season.
The Greyhounds broke nine school records overall on Day 1. The men won 8 of 10 contested events, and their 640 points in the team standings are well ahead of second-place Bucknell (400). The women took first in 5 of 10 events, and their total of 492 points is just 26 back of Bucknell (518) for the top spot.
Mead was dominant throughout the day, as she reached NCAA 'B' cut standards and registered the fastest times all year in the Patriot League in the 200-yard individual medley (1:58.37), the 200 breaststroke (2:11.26) and the 100 backstroke (53.59). She also set a new program best in the 50 freestyle after leading off the 200 free relay with a split time of 22.88 which ranks third overall in the conference.
That relay, which also included
Megan Dickey,
Elizabeth Walsh and
Claire Bowser, would add another school record with a first-place mark of 1:33.26. Mead's 100 back time was recorded while leading off Loyola's victorious 400 medley relay, as she,
Emma Schouten, Walsh and Dickey took first with a time of 3:45.46.
Verheyen bested his own school record in the 200 IM, as his 'B' cut time of 1:45.40 in the evening final is also No. 1 in the Patriot League overall this season. He contributed to four victories for the men on Saturday, completing the 200 breast in 1:58.68, teaming with
Caleb Kelly,
Reid Hussey and
Zach Reid for a first-place effort in the 800 free relay (6:35.99) and teaming with
Conor Rutigliano,
Sung Lee and Kelly to win the 400 medley relay (3:15.46).
Hussey and Kelly had the other individual program records for the men. Hussey bettered his own mark in the 200 fly with a 'B' cut time of 1:46.35, while Kelly (44.30) edged out teammate
Jimmy Hayburn (44.97) to set a new team best in the 100 free.
Hussey, Hayburn, Rutigliano and Kelly began the morning session with a new school record mark of 1:19.99 while claiming first place in the 200 free relay. Rutigliano rounded out the event victories for the men with a time of 48.93 in the 100 back.

Other runner-up performances for the men were recorded by Hussey in the 200 IM (1:49.29),
Dylan Champagne in the 500 free (4:36.09), Lee in the 200 fly (1:48.23) and
Jack Still in the 1-meter dive (261.25 points). David Hess took third in the 200 breast (2:03.27) and
Tommy Noone was third in the 500 free (4:38.08).
Walsh had the other individual win for the Greyhound women, as she topped the field in the 100 back (56.00) and added a third-place showing in the 200 IM (2:03.86).
Dickey was the runner-up in the 100 free after touching the line in 50.41. The Greyhound women also had four additional individuals place third in finals, including
Stella Meyerhoeffer in the 100 back (57.88), Schouten in the 200 breast (2:17.26),
Molly Davis in the 200 fly (2:03.87) and
Anna Donato in the 3-meter dive (194.35).
Lily Bistline had a strong performance in the 3-meter prelims, as she was third in the afternoon with a score of 192.50 points.
Loyola's 800 free relay group of Bowser,

Sarah Abril and
Izzy Barnette concluded the morning session with a runner-up time of 7:43.80.
The Greyhounds are right back in the pool tomorrow morning, with Sunday's preliminary session getting underway at 10 a.m.
